Copyright and Legal Information ----------------------------------------------------------------------- I. INTRODUCTION Harry Potter: Quidditch World Cup is the first game to allow players to experience the thrill and excitement of Quidditch. Quidditch is a fictional sport that is played and enjoyed by witches and wizards throughout the Harry Potter universe. Think of a combination of soccer, basketball, and ice hockey on flying broomsticks. Originally I was skeptical of this game, since most license-based games are horrible and I am not the biggest of Potter fans. However after purchasing it and playing for a while... in the words of the French Quidditch commentator "I love ze Quidditch so much" that I felt inspired to write my very first FAQ. This game is excellent with great graphics and tons of replay value. It's also just downright FUN. It may be a little easy for some players since it seems geared more toward younger Harry Potter fans but for someone like me who has never played a sports game before it is just right. If you are a Potter fan you owe it to yourself to get this game! This FAQ is written for the GameCube version of the game but I suppose it will work for other versions. The controls given are specifically for the GameCube. II. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Which team is the best? All of the teams use the same controls and can perform the same special move tackles, volley shots, special shots, and combos. Some teams have special moves that score more 10 points at a time. Teams like that can give you an advantage when you are trying to earn a Quidditch Card that requires you to win by so many points or score so many goals. Other than that, the teams are all equal. There is no “best team,” not even Bulgaria. How can you play different Hogwarts school years? Sorry, you can’t play different years. What positions can you play? All of them! You get to play as Chasers, Beaters, Seeker, and Keeper. However your role as Keeper is really limited. How many rounds are in the World Cup? 18 Should I get this game? I can’t decide that for you. Rent it if you’re not sure. Does this game get harder? Truthfully, this isn’t a very difficult game even on Firebolt mode. There are four difficulty levels though and the highest is definitely harder than the lowest. III. GETTING STARTED Initial Game Modes: Hogwarts - Go to Hogwarts to learn how to play Quidditch and win the Hogwart's Quidditch Cup and tickets to the World Cup. Go here first! World Cup - Select an international Quidditch Team and try to win the highest of all Quidditch awards, the Quidditch World Cup. Exhibition - Choose a team and a stadium to play a match against the computer or challenge a friend in two-player mode. Hogwart's teams can only play against other Hogwart's teams and International Teams must play against other International Teams. Inventory - Look at your Quidditch Card collection, save/load the game, view the available special moves, etc. Your Quidditch Career Begins: When you first start the game you will be given a very enthusiastic greeting by Harry Potter himself. Then Oliver Wood (the Gryffindor Team's Keeper) will give you a brief introduction to the wonderful sport of Quidditch. Quidditch Basics: The Quidditch pitch is an oval 500 ft long by 180 ft wide. At each end of the pitch there are three goal-hoops. There are two versions of the Hogwart's pitch in the game (one summer and one winter) and each international team has its own stadium. Each Quidditch team is made up of seven players. Three of these players are called Chasers. For most of the game you will control the Chasers. The Chasers play with a large red ball called the Quaffle. The Chasers pass the Quaffle back and forth to one another and try to shoot it through one of the goal hoops. Each goal is worth 10 points. Chasers also try and tackle the other team's Chasers when they are in possession of the Quaffle in order to take the Quaffle back. Each team's goal-hoops are guarded by the team's Keeper. The keeper tries to prevent the Quaffle from going through the hoops. The Keeper also tosses the Quaffle back into play after the opposing team has scored. Unfortunately, you do not get to control the Keeper except to toss the Quaffle back into play. Each team also has two players called Beaters. The Beaters are armed with bats and it is their job to keep two iron spheres called Bludgers away from their team and to knock those Bludgers into the other team's Chasers. Getting hit with a Bludger causes a chaser to lose possession of the Quaffle. The final player on a team is the seeker. The Seeker's job is to catch a very small, very fast ball called the Golden Snitch. A game of Quidditch only ends when the Snitch is caught, and catching the Snitch is worth 150 points. Controls and How to Play: A Button - Pass/Tackle B Button - Shoot Y Button - Bludger X Button - Dodge Z Button - Team Special Move Control Stick - Broomstick Control Control Pad - Navigate Menus Start Button - Pause C Stick - Pass Use the control pad to make selections on menus, scroll through Quidditch cards, etc. Quidditch Cards - As you play the game you will earn Quidditch Cards for things like winning games, breaking records, and pulling off good moves. You can view your Quidditch Card collection whenever you aren't playing by pressing the Y button. Quidditch Cards are required to unlock harder difficulties, team special moves, and even one of the international teams. Looking at a card you haven't earned yet will give you a hint on how to get the card. The Golden Snitch Bar - At the top of the screen is the Golden Snitch Bar, which looks like two halves of a Golden Snitch. Your actions in a Quidditch game, such as passing, shooting, and pulling off special moves causes this bar to fill. When the two halves of the Snitch meet your Seeker will spot the Golden Snitch and you will take part in the Golden Snitch chase. Whichever team has the longer Golden Snitch Bar starts off closer to the Snitch in the chase and has a big advantage. Filling the bar also allows your team to perform special moves such as dodging and fancy tackles. Of course, if the opposing team fills their bar very full they can used those moves against you! Chasers - Chasers pass the Quaffle with the A button and shoot with the B button. You use the control stick to guide the direction of a shot or pass. The C-Stick can also be used for quick passing. You can increase the power of your shot or pass by holding down the button for a while. Be warned that if you hold it down too long your Chaser will automatically shoot or pass, maybe before you are ready. Beaters - Press and hold the Y button to launch a Bludger and use the control stick to direct it toward the other team's chaser. You can't use Bludgers all the time, you get opportunities to use them by filling up your Golden Snitch Bar. Seeker - The Seeker must follow along the golden trail left behind the Golden Snitch as closely as possible. Staying in the middle of the trail lets your Seeker build up more boosting power. Press and hold the A button to boost and get closer to the Snitch. When your Seeker is close enough (he or she will try grabbing at the Snitch) press the B button to make the catch and end the game. Keeper - Use the A button to toss the Quaffle back into play. Basic Special Moves - As your Golden Snitch Bar fills four different special actions become available. These are shown by little icons underneath the Snitch Bar. The first is the dodge. You can press the X button to have your Chaser dodge an incoming tackle. The second is a Bludger shot. Press and hold the Y button to have a Beater launch a Bludger and guide it into your opponent's Chaser. Special Move Tackles can also be performed with the B button. Press and hold the B button and guide the magic swirly-thing over the Chaser with the Quaffle to have your chaser perform a very awesome tackle. Team Special Moves - Each team has a unique special move that you must unlock by winning the corresponding Quidditch Card. Most of these moves have several requirements, such as scoring 15 goals in a match, making three Bludger Hits, and performing combos. Your team can perform its special move after you have unlocked it and the Golden Snitch Bar is full enough. To perform the move, press the Z button when your team has the Quaffle. A team special move guarantees you 10 points, increases your Golden Snitch Bar, and reduces your opponents bar substantially. Some special moves score 20 (Slytherin, for example) or even 30 points (Ravenclaw). Combos - Chasers can perform combo passes and shots by holding down the L, R, or L&R buttons while passing and shooting. A combo is a series of quick passes. A failed pass or holding the Quaffle for too long will interrupt a combo. Performing combos fills your Golden Snitch Bar at a much faster rate that regular passing and shooting. Volley shots can be performed by tapping the A button again while the Quaffle is in the air after passing before the other chaser catches it. If your special move tackle is available you can hold down L&R an press B while in range of the goal-hoops to perform a fancy shot. General Quidditch Tips: -Keep possession of the Quaffle and do not let the other team have it for very long. Keep on the A button to tackle and learn to aim well with Bludgers. Dodge to avoid tackles. -Earn your team's special move as quickly as possible. -A good way to score a goal is to aim for one goal-hoop so that the Keeper flies toward it then quickly shoot through another. -Performing combos and volley shots builds up your Golden Snitch Bar much more effectively than simple passing and shooting. -Use your Team Special Move effectively, unleash it when you opponent's Golden Snitch Bar is getting full to prevent them from using their own special moves. -Play house challenges, Hogwart's practice games, and exhibition games for practice. -Keep your wand handy for a quick score-change charm, just in case. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- IV. THE HOGWARTS QUIDDITCH CUP Choosing Your House Team: After you sit through Potter and Wood's explanation of Quidditch, you will get to choose one of the Hogwart's House Teams and try to win the Hogwart's Quidditch Cup. The winners of the Quidditch Cup get a big trophy and two tickets to the Quidditch World Cup. (You'll notice that the World Cup is locked until you win the Hogwart's Quidditch Cup with at least one of the house teams.) Think very hard about what house the Sorting Hat would put you in since the team you choose will teach you to play Quidditch and will get to be in the audience at the World Cup. Gryffindor: Gryffindors are noble and brave; they also play Quidditch very well. Select Gryffindor and Harry Potter will teach you all about Quidditch. This team wears red and their symbol is a lion. Slytherin: Slytherins will use any means to achieve their ends, especially if that end is winning the Hogwart's Quidditch Cup. Select Slytherin and Draco Malfoy will teach you all about Quidditch. This team wears green and their symbol is a snake. Huffelpuff: Huffelpuffs are kind and good-natured people, they will do their best to win the Quidditch Cup. Select Huffelpuff and Cedric Diggory will teach you all about Quidditch. This team wears yellow and their symbol is a badger. Ravenclaw: Ravenclaws are very intelligent and they'll put those brains to work coming up with amazing Quidditch plays. Select Ravenclaw and Cho Chang will teach you all about Quidditch. This team wears blue and their symbol is a raven. House Challenges and Games: After you choose your team, you will have to complete a series of house challenges before you can play your first Quidditch match. These challenges will teach you the basics of playing a game of Quidditch. For each challenge there are three records to beat, the house record, team record, and school record. Beating these records will, of course, earn you some Quidditch cards. The key to beating the school records is lots of practice and a little luck, so you will probably find yourself playing through the challenges several times to earn all the available Quidditch cards. The challenges are also an excellent way to hone your Quidditch skills before playing World Cup on the higher difficulty levels. Challenge 1 - Passing Your three Chasers will fly around in a v-shaped formation with a magical ring between each Chaser. The rings change color from green to yellow. To succeed in this challenge you have to pass the Quaffle through the rings while they are green. If you pass the Quaffle through a yellow ring or miss the ring altogether there is a time penalty. Challenge 2 - Tackling and Shooting In this challenge one of your Chasers has to tackle a ghost named Edgar Cloggs, who haunts the Quidditch pitch. Tackle Cloggs and fly toward the goal-hoops then shoot the Quaffle into one of the hoops he isn't guarding. Challenge 3 - Seeker A golden snidget has escaped from a snidget reservation and your team's Seeker has been asked to catch it. Follow closely behind the snidget. Stay in the middle of the golden trail to build up your boost power. Hold A to boost and catch the snidget. *After you complete three challenges you will have your first Quidditch match against another house. Use the techniques you have learned to so far and victory will be yours. This match is played without Bludgers, Special Moves, or Combos. Also note that after completing these first three challenges you can select Madame Hooch and play practice games. You might want to play a few practice games since they don't have any effect on your team's standing in the Quidditch League.* Challenge 4 - Beaters and Bludgers Your team's two Beaters and one of your Chasers will fly around the Hogwart's grounds. There are five targets scattered about. When you fly close to a target press and hold Y to launch a Bludger and steer it into the target. After the Bludger hits the target it will rebound and try to hit your Chaser. A good way to avoid this is to turn and have the Chaser fly in the opposite direction so he or she does not get hit before one of the Beaters can knock the Bludger away. Challenge 5 - Dodging and Special Move Tackles This is another challenge involving a Chaser versus Edgar Cloggs. This time hold down the B button and steer the swirling ring over Edgar to stun him. Then press A to tackle him and steal the Quaffle. This time Edgar will be more intent upon taking the Quaffle back so you can now press X to dodge then shoot once you are in range of the goal-hoops. *Now it is time for your second match. Beaters, Bludger, Special Move Tackles, and Dodging will be available in this one. Still, like all the Hogwart's matches it isn't too difficult. Once you win there's only one more challenge and one more game to go before you will the Quidditch Cup!* Challenge 6 - Combos In the final challenge you control your three Chasers. You must perform combo passes and shots. To perform a combo hold down L, R, or both while passing and shooting. If you tap A while the Quaffle is in the air you can perform volley passes. Successfully perform combo passes and score three goals to complete the challenge. *Once you complete the sixth challenge it is time for your final match. This match is a real Quidditch game with the works! When you emerge victorious, Headmaster Dumbledore will present your team with the Quidditch Cup and two tickets to go and see the Quidditch World Cup! The World Cup is now unlocked as well. Congratulations.* Playing Through Hogwarts Again: To earn all of the Quidditch Cards available at Hogwarts you will need to win the Quidditch Cup at least once with each of the four house teams. You can go back to Hogwarts at any time and select another house team. However, you do not have to complete the challenges with another team before trying to win the Quidditch Cup with them. The matches without all of the game play elements enabled only occur on your first time through Hogwarts. Whichever house is at the top of the Quidditch League will be shown cheering in the audience at the World Cup. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- V. THE QUIDDITCH WORLD CUP Once you have won the Hogwart's Quidditch Cup you will get to choose an international team to play with through the Quidditch World Cup, hopefully your team will win the World Cup! All of the teams utilize the same control scheme but they have unique uniforms, brooms, players, and an amazing special move. There are 18 rounds in the World Cup. Your team will play 16 games. You must defeat all of the other teams both at home and away. If you happen to lose a game, don't worry, you get the opportunity to try a re-match. Ludo Bagman is commentator for the Quidditch World Cup and he is joined for each match by one of three guest commentators. The guest commentators are a French witch, a German wizard, and an Australian witch. There are also three different referees, one Spanish, one Nordic, and one French. The guest commentator and the referee are chosen at random and have no real effect upon the match. Difficulty Levels: Unlike Hogwarts, you can play the Quidditch World Cup on four different difficulty levels. The first two levels will probably be unlocked on your first time, but the two higher levels require a higher number of Quidditch Cards to unlock. (See section VI.) The difficulty levels are: Comet 260 Nimbus 2000 Nimbus 2001 Firebolt Comet 260 is roughly the same as a Hogwart's match while Firebolt is substantially more difficult.
