Added some more to Minas Tirith - Top of Wall, and finally added more to Bosses section, and Upgrades Section. Version 1.30 (26th Jan) - Added final walkthrough section, Palantir of Sauron. Made the Palantirs more readable, hope it helps. Finally, I decided that I didn't like the character descriptions, so I did them again. this should be my last BIG update, unless I re-write the walkthrough again. Version 1.35 (27th Jan) - I don't know why, but the guide has gone funny again, so I changed a few things and it should be okay THIS TIME! Version 1.40 (29th Jan) - I'm gonna give it one last chance to work, otherwise I'll just give up on it. Added some more onto Minas Tirith section. ========== CONTENTS ========== 1. About this guide ===================== I got the game just about when it came out in Britian, so I suppose that this guide is based on the British version. I really enjoyed the game, and it inspired me to write an in-depth walkthrough about it. I can't guarantee that it's spoiler-free though. It's been written in 'Normal' mode, so it's really useful for beginners and veterans. There is very little difference in the three difficulty levels, so you can use it for Easy and Hard too. The Return of the King isn't that different from the Two Towers, but it is far more superior. It has amazing graphics, which are combined with Real Return of the King footage, great gameplay value, and a new option, co-op, which lets you play with two players. It's difficulty has soared through the roof, with levels like the Black Gate and Shelob's Lair. You also have a whole cast of new characters like Gandalf, Frodo, Sam and three bonus characters. =============== 2. The basics =============== Return of the King is an Action-Adventure type game with a bit of RPG mixed in with it. It's extremely difficult for a first timer, so you oughta begin with easy mode, even if you've played normal in the previous game. Here are some basic things you oughta know before we get started... ___ ___ / \ 2========= / _ \ | 4 |1==========| (_) | \___/ 3\___/ 1. Your health meter. This is the most important thing in the game. Everytime an enemy hits you, this bar goes down. When it gets really low, it'll start flashing red, so be really careful, and try to avoid too many fights. 2. Your experience bar. There is normally a number above it to, for example 970/1000. This is how much experience you have, and how much you need to get to the next level. When this fills, you get some more abilities to buy, and you keep the previous experience too. 3. This is your hit meter. Every time you hit an enemy, this'll fill a tiny bit. When this fills, your whole body will glow blue, and each hit you do does extra damage. to help fill this, use more powerful moves and combos. If you get hit though, the bar drops right back down and you have to start again. This also decreases over time. 4. This is your character picture. It's not important, it just shows who you're playing as. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -- On the battlefield, you'll find various items... Red bottles - these restore small amounts of health Green bottles - these restore large amounts of your health Arrows - these replenish twenty arrows Elfstones - these give you an extra 1000 experience points ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -- As well as other things, these are generally surrounded by a glowing blue circle... Spears - these can break an enemy's shield, or inflict damage Fire spears - a more powerful version of a spear Catapults - these can be fired at things to cause HUGE damage Hot oil - these will burn anything in their way Hot coals - these will also burn anything in the way (even you) Balista - these will cause HUGE damage to enemies Catapults - these are used for destroying buildings etc. There are others that do other things like open gates and lower drawbridges, just have a look around. ------------ - Controls ------------ D-pad - Move X - Speed Attack / Fire missile [] - Parry O - Kick / Shove /\ - Fierce Attack R1 - Action R2 - Shadow Strike L1 - Draw Bow L2 - Jump Back START - Pause SELECT - No-function Move - well duh... (you must use the left d-pad) Speed Attack - fast attack, useless against sheielded enemies Fire missile - hold L1 and press X to fire, hold X for more power Parry - block arrows and sword attacks Kick / Shove - knock an enemy back leaving him vunerable Fierce Attack - breaks shields and pierces armour Action - press when inside a blue circle for various effects Shadow Strike - stab an enemy when he's grounded Draw bow - draw your bow, staff etc. Jump Back - jump backwards to avoid being struck Pause - temporarily stop the game -------------- - Characters -------------- NOTE: THESE ARE OPINIONS BASED ON A SURVEY I DID - YOU MAY THINK DIFFERENT TO MY RESULTS In this section, I will feature all of the playable characters, including the three bonus characters. They will also be rated so you can get a rough picture of their strengths and weaknesses... Power - how strong the melee (close-range) weapon is Speed - how fast they are while attacking (mainly Killing Move and Combos) Missile - how powerful the ranged weapon is Accuracy - how far they can shoot, how accurate they are Endurance - how much damage they can take before dying These stats are out of 5, 1 being junk and 5 being superb. ~~~~~~~ Aragorn ~~~~~~~ A ranger from the north, known as Strider. Heir to the throne of Gondor, Aragorn has royal blood in him. He has a wide knowledge of the landscape, and is a very powerful Fellowship member. He wields the only weapon Sauron fears, the Narsil, which was broken when Isildur cut his hand off. Reforged by Elrond, the Narsil can slice any opponent in half. He also carries a bow for long-range fighting. Power - 4 Speed - 4 Missile - 4 Accuracy - 4 Endurance - 4 === TOTAL 4 ~~~~~~~ Faramir ~~~~~~~ Son of Denethor, nutter of Gondor (sorry, Steward of Gondor), Faramir was next in line to be protected of the Throne. Brother of Boromir, who died protecting the Hobbits, Faramir vows to seek revenge on the Uruk-hai and avenge his brother. He also wields a sword similar to the Narsil, and an elven longbow for long-ranged shooting. Power - 4 Speed - 4 Missile - 4 Accuracy - 4 Endurance - 4 === TOTAL 4 ~~~~~ Frodo ~~~~~ Frodo is the ring-bearer. He is a Hobbit, a race of of strong-willed, kind-hearted little people. The ring was given to him as a present by his uncle Bilbo, and he only found out it's true malice when he was urged to destroy it by Gandalf. He wields his uncle Bilbo's 'Sting', and wears his famous Mithril Vest. He also has the ability to make himself invisible temporarily, which is a highly useful ability indeed. Power - 2 Speed - 5 Missile - 2 Accuracy - 3 Endurance - 5 === TOTAL 3 ~~~~~~~ Gandalf ~~~~~~~ At 7000 years old, Gandalf still has a spring in his step as he cleaves through enemies softly and swiftly. Once Gandalf the Grey, he was killed (I think), in the mines of Moria by the Balrog. Revived by the Mirror of Galadriel, he now lives for one purpose, to destroy the ring. He is in possession of his mighty white staff, and his famously powerful sword. His light projectiles can blast through several enemies at once, leaving a whole army devastated! Power - 4 Speed - 3 Missile - 5 Accuracy - 4 Endurance - 3 === TOTAL 4 ~~~~~ Gimli ~~~~~ Gimli, son of Gloin is a mini battle-tank. He is a dwarf from Moria, and can hold is own even against several orcs. His small size may fool the enemies, but it shouldn't fool you. Gimli is the most powerful close combat fighter in the Fellowship, and with his mioghty axe, no-one can stand in his way. Power - 5 Speed - 2 Missile - 2 Accuracy - 2 Endurance - 5 === TOTAL 3 ~~~~~~~ Legolas ~~~~~~~ Legolas is an elf from Mirkwood. All elves have the gift of immortality, but he risks his life to protect Frodo. Armed with his elvish longbow, he can fire arrows and still hit a target hundreds of meters away. Also armed with twin blades, his fighting skill is remarkable, weak, but all the speed of a runaway train. Power - 3 Speed - 4 Missile - 5 Accuracy - 5 Endurance - 3 === TOTAL 4 ~~~~~ Merry ~~~~~ Meriadoc Brandybuck, friend of Frodo, first begins his journey when he tags along with Pippin on Frodo's journey to destroy the ring. Armed with a sharp knife and throwing daggers, as well his stout courage, Merry may look small, but size doesn't matter. Power - 2 Speed - 5 Missile - 2 Accuracy - 3 Endurance - 5 === TOTAL 3 ~~~~~~ Pippin ~~~~~~ Peregrin Took is Merry's best friend, and also tags along with Frodo on his quest to destroy the ring fo good. Pippin is more of an entertainer than a fighter, and his skills lie in his ability to get smashed out of his face and start acting like a prat. Also armed with a sharp knife and throwing daggers, Pippin is small, but tough. Power - 2 Speed - 5 Missile - 2 Accuracy - 3 Endurance - 5 === TOTAL 3 ~~~ Sam ~~~ Samwise Gamgee, Frodo's gardener and bodyguard, he joins the quest when he is caught eavesdropping by Gandalf. Sam has a stout heart, and can take down even Sauron when his master is in danger. Armed with a quick-shot temper, a blade of pure steel and a stack of poisonous throwing knives, Sam lacks physical power, but relies on his shotgun speed for quick dispatches. Power - 2 Speed - 5 Missile - 2 Accuracy - 3 Endurance - 5 === TOTAL 3 ------------------- - Level-up system ------------------- In Lord of the Rings, everytime you kill an enemy, you get a certain amount of points, known as experience points, depending on what rating you got, (I'll talk about those later). You get levels in it too, from one to twenty. Each time you gain a level, you unlock a host of new abilities to buy. You don't buy them with money though, you buy them with the experience you earned. (I'll refer to experience now as 'exp.') E.g. I play Helm's Deep and get 12,000 exp. points. I also go up two levels. So now I can buy level three abilities, (you start at level one...) I buy Orc Hewer, which costs 1000 exp. points, which leaves me with 11,000 exp. left over to buy some more moves. Each character has a different set of abilities. But if you get some exp. points, and decide not to use them on someone (say Gandalf), you can save them and use them on another character instead. Pretty cool. Every kill you do earns you a different amount of exp. points, like killing an Uruk-hai get you more than killing a normal Orc, but less that what you would get if you killed a troll. If you string together a number of successful attacks though, the amount of exp. points awarded changes. If you kill several enemies without getting hit, your ranking goes up. (You can see what your ranking is on the dial in the bottom corner.) It'll also go up if you block an enemy attack, get a normal hit in, or successively use a combo. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Using the dial... (the one next to your health) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The dial to the left of your health shows how good you are doing. The further around the circle the colours go, the more points are awarded for a kill. When you kill an enemy, you get a rating and a number above you. Fair 150 This will change from time to time. If you fill the dial on the left 1/4 full, the letters will change according to your ranking. At the 1/4 mark, you rank will change to good, at the 1/2 way mark, they will change to excellent, and when the meter is filled, your rank will change to perfect. Good Excellent Perfect 300 400 600 Fair - you get an average amount of points Good - you get double the amount of points Excellent - you get (just under) triple the amount of points Perfect - you get four times more points E.g. If I kill an Uruk-hai, I'd normally get 150 exp. points, but my meter is half full, (which would count as excellent), so I'd get 400 instead. If the meter was full though, I'd get a round 600, but if it was only a quarter full, I'd only get 300. So you get the basic idea, I hope. It's not been explained too well, but you should do okay. ======================= 3. Character Upgrades ======================= Each character has a different set of abilities to buy. At level 2, Aragorn could buy Ranger Fury, whereas Gimli couldn't buy this, he'd have to buy Dwarven Fury instead. Some moves though, can be brought by everyone, so these are known as Fellowship upgrade. Moves that can only be brought by one person are listed on the right, with an N/A in the Fellowship column. Moves that can be brought by all are listed in both columns. They can be brought induvidually, or they can be brought cheaply for all nine characters at about twice/three times the normal price, (this is the better option to buy). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Aragorn / Walkthrough ================ ---------------------- - Path of the Wizard ---------------------- ~~~~~~~~~~~ Helm's Deep ~~~~~~~~~~~ _________ |_ _| | X - Start Point | | | B B B | L - Ladder/Rope | |_| | B - Ballista | |L__________| | | | | |L | |_| X | This is the easiest level in the game because you can't die. It's really a training level just to let you get used to the controls. The mission begins with a long FMV (video), where you'll get dropped into the battle. You're surrounded by Urak-Hai, so keep pressing X until they die. After a while, Gimli will call you and you'll have to follow him. This time, the enemies have shields, so use /\ to break them. Climb the ladder and help Legolas kill the Urak-Hai. Hold L1 and press X to fire your magic. When they're all dead, you have to follow Legolas down the rope to help Aragorn. Stand in the blue circle and press R1 to slide down. You'll immediately notice three balistas on the field. Run up to them and press R1 in the blue circle to fire them. That's it, as soon as you fire the third balista, you'll have completed the level! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Road to Isengard ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ __ _ | |_T_|E| X - Start Point | ___ | * - Checkpoint | | T | | T - Tower | | T _\ \ E - Elfstone | | _|D| | D - Dam / / |_ | | | |_ |___| |_ | |*| | |__ |__ | | |__ |__ | _______| |_ | | | | | | | | |_______ _| ______| | |* ______| | | | |___ |___ | | | / / | | \ \ / / | | As soon as you start, you'll see a bunch of Urak-Hai running away from you. Don't shoot at them, it won't work. Instead, follow them, killing any that attack you, until you get to a checkpoint. Go down the slope, and you'll be attacked by four Orcs. Now you have to kill 75 Orcs / Urak-Hai to get to the next part of the level. You could risk being trod on and run into the middle of the field, or you could stay back and let the Ents do the work (the second choice is better). After killing 75, an Ent will clear the way so you can get to another checkpoint. Along the way though, you'll see some carts with explosives in them, if you shoot them, you'll kill all the enemies nearby. Carry on, and you suddenly be attacked by hundreds of arrows. Look to the other side of the river and you'll see five towers with more explosive carts underneath. If you destroy the carts, you'll also destroy the towers. Cross the bridge, killing the two Urak-Hais as you go. You should head left to grab the Elfstone (these add 1000 exp to your meter), but if you don't feel it's necessary then don't get it. Follow the path to the right and you'll eventually see another Ent trying to break the dam. Help him out by killing all of the Orc Archers etc. that are attacking him. When the dam breaks, Isengard will be flooded, and you'll have also completed the level! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Minas Tirith - Top of the Wall ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ S S ________ _ _ _______ X - Start Point |______ |E||P| _____| S - Siege Tower Locations _| |____| __--> C - Catapult |C|____X___|E| E - Empty Tower --> - Stairs to Courtyard P - Prize Tower (seven Elfstones) The main objective of the mission is to stop the wall from becoming infested with orcs. The meter at the top shows the wall, and how many Orcs are on it. The small red dots are ladders, and the big red dots are siege towers. Start off by kicking down all of the ladders, killing any Orcs as you go. Continue ding this for about five minutes and an FMV will cut in showing several trolls carrying siege towers. Run straight to the left knocking over the ladders as you go. When the siege tower is directly in front of you, pummel it with magic until it collapses. Head right this time and do the same to the second one. Head left AGAIN and destroy the third one. The forth and final one is guaranteed to hit the wall, so head right again ready for it. Kill all of the Orcs nearby and blow up the tower. Head left again and follow the flow of men to get to the courtyard. That's it, you've finished the level. NOTE - If you kill the Ringwraith near the catapult, seven (yes, SEVEN) Elfstones will appear on the tower in the top-right corner of the level. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Minas Tirith - Courtyard ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ___ 1 ___ | P | X - Start Point | _ | 1 - Orcs come in here... | |_| | 2 - and here... ___|P X |___ H - Women hide here... H _______ P_ ___2 P - Potion Barrel, break them open with /\ _/ |___| This is Gandalf's last and hardest mission, but it's actually really easy. You have to rescue 200 women from being slayed by the enemies. Just go around being the hero and slaghtering as many Orcs as you can. Orc Bane and Bane of Sauron will be EXTREMELY effective here, as they put you in perfect mode, which can mean you get tons more experience. After about 100 people have been saved, Orc champions will come in, throw them a couple of war pikes to kill them. After about 150, trolls will come in, again, give them a good war pike or two and they'll die. When the meter reaches 200, you've completed the level. -------------------- - Path of the King -------------------- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Paths of the Dead ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This is your first mission where you get to chose who you be. This mission is better with Aragorn, because he has a wide range of skills. Head along the path until you get to the mist. This doesn't hurt, it just slows you down. If you want to 'cheat', you can turn around and press L2 to hop backwards quickly. Soon after, you'll be attacked by spectres (that's spec-ter). These are basic enemies, just continually press X to kill them. Carry on forwards, but this time when you are attacked, a wall will appear, and will only break when all of the enemies are dead. Press X again to kill them. Carry on through the mist, get attacked again, and carry on some more. This time, two spectres will form on top of a bridge. Hold L1 and press X to fire your bow at them. Go under the bridge and be attacked some more. Where the two bag o' bones were, is a passage, go down it to get an Elfstone. Go left some more and push the boulder over to kill some shielded spectres, then go back the way you came and go down the hill instead. Follow the path and you'll encountertwo shielded spectres. Press /\ to break their shields, then X to kill them. Stay on the path, be attacked again, and again, and again. You should see a drawbridge, so head right and use the lever to lower it. Go through the mist and destroy the spectres and carry on. After the pillars collapse, and you go through a final patch of mist, you'll hit a dead-end. Knock over the statue, and you'll hit another dead-end. Go down the slope and turn the other lever, opening the gate which leads to the main part of the level. Go through the gate, and cross the narrow causeway until you get boxed in. You'll have to kill 35 enemies to get through, do that and you win the level! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ King of the Dead ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This level is really easy. First of all, you have to fight the King of the Dead (duh...), then you have to escape from the cave while avoiding getting crushed by falling rocks. Easy enough... The King of the Dead takes alot of hitting, but he can't fight for jack. First of all, He'll attack three times, which you can avoid by blocking with []. Then you can give him a quick Orc Hewer before blocking again. After another round of attacks, he'll sink into the ground. Take this chance to use Shadow Strike on him (R2). He'll now summon four dead monsters, dispose of them and carry on. When his health gets into the yellow, he'll start blasting you with fog attacks. Hide behind a rock and use your bow while he's recovering. Every time he attacks now, he'll attack five times instead, then takes a break, attacks, then takes a break, attacks, then sinks into the ground. Following this pattern, he'll soon die. Now you have to escape. Just run like hell and you'll be attacked. Kill all the bad guys and carry on. This is really simple because there's only one path to chose, and you'll only be attacked three times. You've now completed the King of the Dead. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Southern Gate ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ M ___ X - Start Point ____________| __|_ C - Catapults |3___*___T____|L | 1 - Orcs come from here... |______| T |__| |__| 2 - here... | | 3 - and here... | C | T - Troll | C C | L - Ladder |______ _______| M - Mumakil |___1__| X |___2___| X - Gate Winch This is Gondor's South Gate, and you have to reclaim the fortress. Begin by heading towards the gate, where you'll be ambushed by about two hundred Orcs (seriously). Head left and fire both catapults by pressing R1 then climb the rubble of the ruined tower. Kill all of the Orcs, and the Mumakil (the giant elephant). Turn the lever to open the gate, kick over the two pots of boiling oil, and go back to ground level. Head through the gate and you've completed the level. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Pellanor Fields ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ______________ | ______ ____| |S|B B ___| B X - Start Point | EM - Eowyn and Merry W|EM X W - Witch King |_ ___ B - Ballista |S|B_B___ |B_B_ S - Shooting Point |______________| This is the hardest mission on Path of the King. First of all, you have to kill sixty enemies, then you have to rescue Merry and Eowyn. Shoot the Mumakil, then head directly to the other side of the battlefield to kill the other Mumakil. Head left and shoot the Witch King. Every now and then, more Mumakil will attack, just head to the appropriate side and shoot them down. After killing each one, go back and shoot the Witch King. After killing the King, you'll have saved Merry and Eowyn and completed the level... hurray! ~~~~~~~~~~ Black Gate ~~~~~~~~~~ _|1|_ X - Start Point _| X | 1 - Enemies come from here... |3|* *| 2 - here... |__*__2 3 - and here... (only two from here) * - Allies This is the last mission with Aragorn or whoever you chose. If you have Legolas to level 10 with his best upgrades, then use him, otherwise use Aragorn. There is a meter in the top corner displaying 0/6. Each champion you kill will increase this meter... but first you have a boss to fight. The Mouth of Sauron is so easy. Run up to him and continually press X, X, X, then parry, X, X, X, parry etc. Continue this to get an easy kill. Now hordes of enemies will flood in. Stand on the hill near the entrance and waste as many as you can using arrows or your sword attacks. (If you're using Legolas, you should be able to fire two arrows at once instead of one!) After the first champion enters, Gimli's health bar will appear at the top, then Gandalf's, then whoever you aren't using, e.g. Legolas or Aragorn. Look after your allies, if they die, you lose the level. After killing three champions, enemies will attack from in front, on the left, and on the right. Guard your allies well, and kill the remaining champions. This may take several tries to get right. You'll hit a checkpoint, and three Nazguls attack (Ringwraiths). Throw a fire spear at them, then shoot them with your arrows. Don't go close to them, they are deadly. Again, guard your allies well. Kill all three to finish the level. ----------------------- - Path of the Hobbits ----------------------- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Escape from Osgiliath ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This is your first mission with Sam. The Path of the Hobbit is the hardest path of all. On the first mission, you have to escape from Osgiliath without being captured by the Nazgul. In the top corner, there's a bar that sometimes appears, if this fills red, then you lose the mission. The bar shows how close the Nazgul is, and how well he can see you. There is only one path to go, so follow it. The left wall will explode, so go through it and up the slope. A meter will appear in the top right corner, if this fills, you lose the mission. Carry on going, only fighting Orcs if they get in your way, time is strict! Hiding under roofs will lower the meter, so if it gets dangerous, find a hiding place. Eventually, you'll reach a ladder, climb down it, and your Nazgul meter will vanish. Kill the archers and climb down the second ladder. You'll be led into a battle, so wipe out the Orcs and continue up the stairs. Head up the second slope, through the arch, and up the ladder. Climb the steps, and hide under the tower. Head on and down the steps, where you'll hit a dead end. Climb the stairs and push the bell by pressing R1, this will bust open the door, so go back down and through the archway. Climb the stairs, run past the archers, past some more Orcs and continue on until you reach another ladder. Climb down it, kill the four Orcs and climb down the last ladder into the sewers. Kill the Troll, the archers and the Orcs, grab the potions and open the gate... well done! Mission complete! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Shelob's Lair ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This is the most terrifying mission of all, SPIDERS!!! On this level, there are several paths, but all lead to the same place eventually, so don't get upset if you hit a fork or something. Head forwards first and turn left, then right, then left again. Head right, watching out for the spiders, and you'll hit a fork with two ways, forwards or backwards. Go forwards, then left, then left again. You should be at the point where there are two torches. Throw one at the spiders so they scatter, then continue through, throwing another torch at the spider web. Mind the Orcs and go left through the tunnel. Carry on until you see another Orc gathering. Go up the slope to the right, kill the two guards and knock over the boulders. Go back down and burn the web to get through. Here you'll meet Shelob, but don't worry, just carry on across the bridge. Throw both torches at the spiders to scatter them, then continue until you find some more baby spiders. Use the first torch to scatter them, then the second to burn the web. Follow the left wall around them and go through the web, up the passage to fight Shelob. But first, throw the torch onto the right set of spiders, then climb the slope, burn the web, then go back down. This time, use the left passage and scatter the next set of spiders. Now for the mother load... Shelob! Sneak up behind her and give her a good old Orc Hewer. Now she'll chase you. Block her attacks, and attack her back. Sam'll poke her eye out when you've done enough damage. She'll climb up the wall and throw about ten midget-spiders at you, wipe them out, then keep on the move as Shelob will pounce on you. Attack her while she's down then keep hitting her until Sam chops her leg off. Shelob goes beserk, and will run around in circles knocking you off your feet. To avoid this, stand next to a wall so she can't hit you. When she's done, carry on pounding her until she runs away. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Cirith Ungol ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Here, you have to kill 80 enemies to get to the tower, so go around throwing knives at them etc. until you're done. Go forward and kill the troll, then lower the drawbridge. Follow the passage until you get to another room with about 30 Orcs in it. Waste the lot of them then go through the double arch, up the stairs and cut the rope. The whole roof will collapse, killing the lot of them as well. You should now have about 80. If not, scout around. Go back to the room you were in before and lower that drawbridge, then climb the ladder. Kill the other Orcs, then topple the two barrels. Carry on and you'll hear a rather cumbersome Orc shout "We're gettin' clobbered, pull out!" Follow them, and use the catapult/ballista to kill them all. Continue into the tower where you'll find Frodo, and another boss. This guy is TOUGH. He's not hard, just tedious. First of all, throw a spear at him to break his shield, then another one to stun him. Do an Orc Hewer on him, then use R2 to blast a large amount of health from him. Carry on doing this to beat him. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Crack of Doom ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ______ ______| | X - Start Point |____P_ X P| P - Potion |______| |--| - Area where rock breaks off (part 5) |----| This is the final and easiest level. You have to fight Gollum. He's not tough, just indestructable. There are six stages in the fight, as you have to knock him off the edge six times. To knock him off, get him to the edge, slash him until he's balancing, then press O to knock him. Of course, it's not that easy, you have to press R2 when he's hanging on to make him fall. A really clever trick is to stand near the edge and wait for him to jump at you. When he's off guard, knock him off. 1) Nothing special - knock him off. 2) Rocks begin to fall from the roof. 3) More rocks. 4) Lava spills all over the place - avoid it at all costs. 5) Large area of land collapses - smaller fighting field. 6) Lava, rocks etc. - one more hit and he's dead. Well done!!! YOU'VE FINISHED THE GAME! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Palantir of Saruman ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ______ / \ / \ / /\ \ X - Start Point \ \/ / P - Pick-up area \ P--P / \__X___/ In order to play the Palantir of Saruman, you need to have beaten the Crack of Doom. It also needs to be completed to be able to complete the game a hundred percent. It is the second hardest level in the game, and is best played with Faramir or Aragorn as they have all-round skills. Either character has to be level 10 with every ability in order to stand a chance. The level consists of twenty floors, with a certain amount of enemies on each floor. To get to the next floor, you have to beat every enemy on the floor below. Every time you complete a floor, a red potion will appear. This is the last level you need to play in order to get a 100% completion rating. It also is the hardest level in the game, or in fact, any of the three LoTR games. It offers tons of experience as there are roughly three hundred enemies in total! Instead of having Ghosts, similar to the Palantir of Saruman, it has easterlings, who are harder to kill, as well as having really powerful champions. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -- First Floor - 24 unshielded Orcs - this is more difficult than the previous level, but just parry and use Orc Bane. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -- Second Floor - 24 unshielded Easterlings - use the same technique as above to succeed. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -- Third Floor - 13 unshielded Orcs - as above - 13 unshielded Easterlings - as above ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -- Fourth Floor - 14 Orc archers - try not to waste arrows, run up to them and slash the gits instead. Don't forget to parry. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -- Fifth Floor - 14 Orc crossbowmen - these have more powerful arrows, so parry alot, use above technique to kill them. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -- Sixth Floor - 10 Orc archers - as above - 10 Orc crossbowmen - as above ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -- Seventh Floor - 12 shielded Uruk-hai - break thir shields carefully, avoid being hit, and use banes alot! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -- Eighth Floor - 12 shielded Easterlings - as above ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -- Ninth Floor - 8 shielded Uruk-hai - as above - 8 shielded Easterlings - as above ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -- Tenth Floor - 12 unshielded Orcs - as above - 12 Orc crossbowmen - as above ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -- Eleventh Floor - 16 unshielded Easterlings - as above - 5 Orc archers - as above ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -- Twelfth Floor - 10 Orc crossbowmen - as above - 12 shielded Uruk-hai - as above ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -- Thirteenth Floor - 10 Orc archers - as above - 12 shielded Easterlings - as above ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -- Fourteenth Floor - 8 Orc archers - as above - 8 unshielded Easterlings - as above - 8 shielded Uruk-hai - as above ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -- Fifteenth Floor - 6 Orc archers - as above - 8 unshielded Orcs - as above - 12 shielded Easterlings - as above ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -- Sixteenth Floor - 6 Uruk-hai Champions - as the hardest champions in the game, they can only be beaten after a couple of /\ attacks to break their armor. Bog standard easy to kill, with a weak attack. ~~~~ Uruk ~~~~ These are the big orcs which are almost as easy easy to kill. They have a bigger amount of health, but can be easily dispatched. ~~~~~~~~ Uruk-hai ~~~~~~~~ You don't see these alot, but they are really just uruks with a more powerful attack. Again, use swift attacks. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Shielded Orc ~~~~~~~~~~~~ These are just Orcs with spears and a shield. Press /\ first, then X to kill them easily. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Shielded Uruk-hai ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ These are just uruk-hai who've managed to scab a shield from somewhere. Press /\ first, then X to dispatch them. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Orc Champions ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ These are the fat blobby guys who have a hammer and a blunt sword. You can recognise them by the green bar over their head. To kill them, you have to use /\ several times and then press X. When the green bar disappears, they die. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Uruk Champion ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ These are the guys with the two large maces. They are more powerful than normal Uruks, but can be killed the same way as the Orc Champions. NOTE - They have a really annoying charge attack which they use when you try to get up. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Uruk-hai Champion ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ These have long hooked swords. They are the most powerful champion in the game, except the trolls. They also use a charge attack, and can only be killed after breaking through a thick layer of armour. ~~~~~ Ghost ~~~~~ These are simple as hell. Just use X and they die. They have about the same amount of health as an Orc. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Shielded Ghost ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ These are just ghosts with a lance and a shield. Again, more powerful than a normal ghost, use /\, then X to strike them down. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Ghost Champion ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Similar to Orc champions, these do not wear armour, so you can dispatch them using speed attacks. ~~~~~~~~~~ Easterling ~~~~~~~~~~ These are the guys in the red/white gear. Their main weapon is a sword, which does pitiful amounts of damage. Use speed attacks or banes to dispatch them. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Shielded Easterling ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ These have long spears which really get up your nose. They are more powerful than normal Easterlings, and you need to break their shield before you can kill them. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Easterling Champion ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ These have two spears and a thick layer of armour which will require several fierce attacks to break. They are the most powerful breed of Easterlings, and their main move is to use a Bane on you which will knock you off your feet. ~~~~~~~~~~~ Tiny Spider ~~~~~~~~~~~ These aren't really enemies, they just hurt you. They hang around in groups, and cannot be killed. To scatter them, throw a torch at them. They shouldn't cause too much trouble unless you run into them... literally. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Small Spiders ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ These are the larger spiders that can hurt you real bad. They can easily be killed by using X, or you could press /\ then R2 to swifty destroy them. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Large Spiders ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ These can only be found on the Palantir of Saruman. They are the same as the small spiders, except they do more damage, have more health, and do your head in even more! ~~~~~~~~~~ Small Troll ~~~~~~~~~~ These are human sized trolls that can only be found on the Palantirs. They have no armour, so shoot them, swift them etc. They still do damage, despite their size, but shouldn't be a problem. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Medium Troll ~~~~~~~~~~~~ These are more dangerous than the small trolls, so you best bet is to shoot them. They have no armour, but can bowl you over in a single shot. ~~~~~~~~~~~ Large Troll ~~~~~~~~~~~ These are a real pain. They do even more damage than the other two, they have more health, and can knock you over like a feather. Again, your best bet is to shoot them. NOTE - The troll family is a cumbersome race. When they swing their clubs around, they kill their own troops too! ---------- - Bosses ---------- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ King of the Dead ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The King of the Dead takes alot of hitting, but he can't fight for jack. ~~~~~~~~~~ Witch King ~~~~~~~~~~ This boss is so easy. First of all, kill the two Mumakil, then head left, charge up an arrow, and wait until he stays still. FIRE! It should, (if you have some decent arrows) knock about half his health off! Head right again, kill the Mumakil, and go left. Charge another arrow, and let 'er rip. He'll soon die. NOTE - Don't worry about Merry and Eowyn, they have loads of health. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Mouth of Sauron ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This guy's all talk (get it), he's not got a single ounce of skill in his body. Before you start try to get hold of either Orc Hewer, Swift Justice or Helm's Hammer. Shield Cleaver, Lightning Strike and Dark Deliverance are useless. Then just pummel him with one of the three moves. If you do this, he shouldn't be able to get a move in. If you see him crouching down, use a speed attack on him. If you don't, he'll jump up and knock you over. After a few hits, he'll die. ~~~~~~ Shelob ~~~~~~ This boss is the hardest boss in the game, because you are a Hobbit, and you have about as much strength as a dead rabbit. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Beserker (I think his name is Lurtzburg) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This guy is TOUGH. He's not hard, just tedious. First of all, throw a spear at him to break his shield, then another one to stun him. Do an Orc Hewer on him, then use R2 to blast a large amount of health from him. Carry on doing this to beat him. ~~~~~~ Gollum ~~~~~~ This is easy, you just have to knock him off the edge of the cliff and he'll lose some health. Do this six times and you win. stand near the edge and wait for him to pounce. Move out the way, press X to knock him off his balance, and then use Final Judgement to knock him off. His only two attacks are a flying kick, and a swipe/punch kinda thing. ---------- - Others ---------- ~~~~~~~ Mumakil ~~~~~~~ The Mumakil are the giant Elephants (there real name are Oliphants) that fire loads of arrows at you and stomp on you etc. They have three shield plates on their sides which hold a carriage full of arrow-firing orcs. To kill them, fire an arrow at the plates until they're all destroyed. Then fire another few arrows at the actual beast to blow it up. ~~~~~~~~~~~ Siege Tower ~~~~~~~~~~~ These aren't really enemies as such, they just blast large holes in the wall. They are only found in Minas Tirith - Top of the Wall, where they mount the wall and release shedloads of orcs onto the wall. To dispatch them, fire your bolts at them until they collapse. Alternatively, you could use the catapult and fire two cannonballs at them. ~~~~~~~~~~ Ringwraith ~~~~~~~~~~ Again, not really a boss, they just linger around on Black Gate trying to kill you. To dispose of them, throw a spear at them, then blast them with your arrows. If you run out of arrows, throw a spear at them and fight at close range. Only use this as a LAST resort, as each hit they throw can seriously damage you. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Winged Wraith ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This is only found in Gandalf's Minas Tirith mission. When the seige towers come to attack you, fire the catapult at the first one, use arrows on the second, and when you are about to fire the catapult at the third one, the Wraith will come down and try to attack you. Use a couple of bolts and he will fly off, breaking off a huge chunk of the wall at the same time. ~~~ Dam ~~~ This is found on The Road to Isengard. The Ent will be trying to pull it down so that the river will flood Isengard. You have to save the Ent by shooting all of the archers that are shooting it. Don't worry, the Ent won't die, so you can take your time. Alternatively, you can shoot the dam yourself, which does small amounts of damage, but will still destroy it. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Explosives Cart ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ These too are only found in Gandalf's mission. They are big trailers full of wierd spiky looking things. To destroy it, shoot it! Easy enough. Keep your distance though, they make a big BANG!!! which will kill anyone within range. ========= 6.
