Introduction to Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks] <^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^<^>^<^>^<^ Before some of you cringe at the thought of another Mortal Kombat adventure game, there are a few things that need to be cleared up. First and foremost, Shaolin Monks in no way resembles either Mythologies: Sub-Zero or Special Forces. Instead it seeks to distinguish itself through a robust move upgrade system, ko-op gameplay, multidirectional kombat, extra modes of play, unlockable characters, and a complete arcade port of Mortal Kombat II among other things. Along with its vast gameplay options, Shaolin Monks takes place between Mortal Kombat 1 and II which can only lead to a deep and engaging storyline. The game does not disappoint in this arena, and will have gamers on the edge of their seats until the conclusion. Shaolin Monks' main gameplay attraction is the ability to play ko- op with a friend. And let me be the first to say that playing ko-op is an absolute blast and should not be missed out on. Along with the initially playable Liu Kang, and Kung Lao, there are a few other secret characters waiting to be unlocked for use in the single player game as well as the VS. Mode. Sure, the graphics may be a little rough around the edges, but the exciting gameplay is what really adds to the atmosphere of this well-crafted game. I strongly urge anyone, fan of Mortal Kombat or not, to at least rent the game and give it a try. I'm certain you won't regret it. Earthrealm is in dire need of saving and it is up to Kang and Lao to do it. So sharpen your hats and perfect your turkey screams, the minions of Outworld await you. <^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^<^>^<^>^ [II. The Story of Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks] <^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^<^>^<^>^ (Taken from the Instruction Booklet): "In the final battle of the first Mortal Kombat tournament, Liu Kang defeated Shang Tsung and saved Earthrealm for domination. But in the confusion of a mysterious earthquake, Shang Tsung and his fellow conspirators escaped through a portal to Outworld. Kung Lao, who had been posing as a Masked Guard, helped his fellow Shaolin Monk escape the crumbling island. Liu Kang and his allies narrowly escaped with their lives." "When they returned home, the Wu Shi Academy was invaded by Baraka and his Tarkatan horde in an attempt to defy the rules of Mortal Kombat and take Earthrealm by force. Although the Shaolin Monks fended off the invastion, Raiden sensed a deeper conspiracy and urged the Shaolin Monks to defeat Shang Tsung in Outworld. Will they succeed? Or will they succumb to Shang Tsung's evil plot?" Continuing in the footsteps of Deadly Alliance and Deception before it, Shaolin Monks presents the player with one of the most satisfying and downright cool opening FMV sequences I have ever seen. Below is a detailed description of what occurs: The FMV starts out in Shang Tsung's Palace at the tail end of the first Mortal Kombat; Tsung is sitting in his throne watching the action unfold. It is every man for himself with Johnny Cage fighting Reptile, Scorpion and Sub-Zero battling it out as well as Kano and Sonya going at it. Scorpion and Sub-Zero are then shown fighting each other. Scorpion punches Sub-Zero in the face causing him to reel back. Sub- Zero shakes it off and freezes Scorpion; Zero proceeds to kick the frozen Scorpion to the ground. Kano comes up behind Zero and punches him in the face causing Sonya to attack and kick Kano around. Kano gains the upper hand on Sonya so Johnny Cage comes to her rescue backflip-kicking Kano to the ground. With Kano downed, Cage puts on his sunglasses only to have Reptile lash out his tongue and wrap it around Cage's neck pulling him over. Reptile proceeds to munch on Cage's head causing massive amounts of blood to spill out. Out of nowhere, Liu Kang comes up from behind Reptile and kicks him in the head causing him to release Johnny Cage's neck. A dumbfounded Shang Tsung stands up and prepares to fight. Tsung motions for his Masked Guards to attack, but Kang quickly uppercuts one in the face and runs up the other's bladed staff only to Bicycle Kick him in the face. Tsung proceeds to jump at Kang only to be met with a kick to the face. Tsung then punches Kang away, and shoots a flaming skull at him. Kang dodges it and the skull smashes into a pillar turning it to debris. Tsung then morphs into Kano and does his cannonball move into Kang sending him falling backward and onto his back. Tsung jumps high into the air and lands hard on Liu Kang's chest. He then starts to steal his soul. With Kang's soul slowly being drained from his body, one of the Masked Guards jump kicks Tsung away from Liu. The camera cuts to the doorway of the palace where we see a couple Tarkata (one of them presumably Baraka) rushing in. The Masked Guard turns around revealing his blade trimmed hat meaning only one thing, Kung Lao! Lao proceeds to whip his hat at the incoming Tarkata decapitating one of them; the hat comes back like a boomerang and Kung Lao places it onto his head as the announcer says, "Kung Lao" in his ever so awesome voice. Kung Lao then pummels the other Tarkata (Baraka) only to be double-teamed by Scorpion. Soon after, Sub-Zero comes to Lao's aid and fights off Sub-Zero; Zero then dodges an attack from a Masked Guard. With one of the guards dizzied, Sub-Zero proceeds to rip out his skull with his spinal cord still attached. He then throws the head and spinal cord into Scorpion sending him reeling. Tsung and Liu Kang now stand face to face. Shang Tsung quickly gets the upper hand with a few quick punches and kicks. Liu Kang backs him off only to see Tsung morph into Scorpion. Scorpion (Shang Tsung) shoots out his patented spear with a loud "Get over here!" With the spear deeply embedded in Kang's chest, Tsung pulls Liu over to deliver a stiff uppercut sending him hard on his back. Scorpion (Tsung) then takes off his mask to reveal a skull and starts to breathe fire, but luckily Liu Kang dodges it. Liu takes this opportunity to start pummeling Shang Tsung with every punch he lands, Tsung temporarily morphs into another character including Kano and Sonya. With Tsung reeling, Liu Kang performs his flying kick straight into Shang's chest sending him backward and through a pillar. With Shang Tsung down, the camera cuts to a semi-hidden doorway. The screen starts to shake and we hear low rumbles getting louder and louder. That can only mean one thing, Goro! Goro lumbers into the main hall getting attacked by everyone to no effect. Johnny Cage even does his Shadow Kick straight into his chest, with no effect; Goro just picks him up, pummels him and tosses Cage across the room. Shang Tsung takes this opportunity to run to the back of the room and summon a portal to Outworld. With his portal summoned, he jumps in followed by Goro, Reptile, Scorpion and Kano. As the portal slowly fades, so does the entire island. As Shang Tsung's palace crumbles, a massive crevice begins to develop. Liu Kang and Kung Lao eventually fall into this crevice; they end up landing in Goro's Lair. Thus the adventure that is Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks begins. <^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^<^>^<^>^ [III. PlayStation 2 and Xbox Default Kontrols] <^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^<^>^<^>^ There are many different buttons to learn and master in Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks; every button on the controller is used. There are the four basic face buttons along with combinations of these buttons. For example in the Xbox version: if the player holds the R Trigger and hits X with Liu Kang, he will shoot a fireball. As the player kills enemies he accrues experience. These experience points can be used to purchase new special moves, new kombos etc. More on the experience system is in Section V. In the end, this section covers the immediately available attacks and the basic controls. -->PlayStation 2 Default Kontrols: <^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^ Left Analog Stick - Move Character Right Analog Stick - Camera Control & Change Camera Mode (Click) D-Pad - Fatality Input/Mini-Map Toggle Start - Stats Menu Select - Pause Menu/Options Square - Quick Attacks Triangle - Launch Attacks Circle - Power Attacks X - Jump/Evade L1 - Fatality Attack R1 - Modifier L2 - Lock-On R2 - Throws -->Xbox Default Kontrols: <^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^< Left Analog Stick - Move Character Right Analog Stick - Camera Control & Change Camera Mode (Click) D-Pad - Fatality Input/Mini-Map Toggle Start - Stats Menu Select - Pause Menu/Options X - Quick Attacks Y - Launch Attacks B - Power Attacks A - Jump/Evade L Trigger - Lock-On R Trigger - Modifier White Button - Fatality Attack Black Button - Throws <^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^ [IV. Advanced Moves and Weapon Kombat] <^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^ In addition to the basic default attacks, Shaolin Monks has a set of advanced maneuvers that require a modifier button. Below is every advanced maneuver and how to perform them. -->Throws: Black Button (Xbox), R2 Button (PlayStation 2) When approaching an enemy, tapping the Throw Button will have Liu Kang or Kung Lao grab the enemy and throw them. Pointing the analog stick in a certain direction will throw the enemy in that direction. Along with throwing enemies, this button will pick up weapons on the ground. -->Enemy Manipulations: Hold R Trigger and tap Black Button (Xbox), Hold R1 Button and tap R2 (PlayStation 2) Holding this combination of buttons will grab an enemy. After grabbing an enemy, the player can take control of them and use them as a human shield. As the game progresses, the player can purchase upgraded manipulation attacks. -->Special Attacks: Hold R Trigger and tap 1 of the 3 basic attack buttons (X,Y or B/Xbox), Hold R1 Button and tap 1 of the 3 basic attack buttons (Square, Triangle, or Circle/PlayStation 2) Holding the modifier button and tapping any of the three basic attack buttons performs a Special Move. These special moves vary depending on which character the player is currently using. Below are both characters' Special Move combinations. *NOTE* Each character has a blue energy bar under their main health bar. As the player uses special moves and attacks, the bar depletes. It recharges automatically after a few seconds. *NOTE* -Liu Kang: R Trigger+X - Fireball R Trigger+Y - Uppercut R Trigger+B - Flying Kick R1 Button+Square - Fireball R1 Button+Triangle - Uppercut R1 Button+Circle - Flying Kick -Kung Lao: R Trigger+X - Teleport R Trigger+Y - Cyclone Spin R Trigger+B - Hat Throw R1 Button+Square - Teleport R1 Button+Triangle - Cyclone Spin R1 Button+Circle - Hat Throw -->Blocks: Hold L Trigger (Xbox), Hold L2 Button (PlayStation 2) Holding the Lock-On/Block Button will block any incoming attacks by an enemy. If the player is hit while blocking, some of their blue energy bar depletes; if the bar is empty, the block will not work. -->Lock-On: Hold L Trigger (Xbox), Hold L2 Button (PlayStation 2) Holding the Lock-On/Block button and not getting attack will focus the characters point of view on the nearest enemy. While locked on to an enemy, the player character will strafe around their enemy. The Right Analog is used to change which enemy the player is locked onto. -->Evades: Hold L Trigger and tap A (Xbox), Hold L2 Button and tap X (PlayStation2) Holding the Lock-On/Block Button and pressing the Jump Button will cause the player character to evade in any direction. This is useful for obvious incoming attacks/projectiles that are easily dodge able. -->Multi-directional Kombat: Multi-directional kombat is one of the things that sets Shaolin Monks apart from other 3-d beat-em-ups. After starting a combo, the player can use the left analog stick to change which direction his or her attacks will go next. This is infinitely useful when the player is surrounded by enemies and attacking them in succession is necessary. -->Fatality Attack: White Button (Xbox), L1 Button (PlayStation 2) When the player builds up his/her Fatality Meter, (the orb that fills up with blood as the player connects successful kombos) he/she can hit the Fatality Button to enter "Fatality Mode." While in this mode, the player is prompted to enter a series of button taps to perform a desired Fatality. The player must have unlocked a Fatality first in order to "use" it. -->Weapon Kombat: Weapons can be found scattered throughout many of Shaolin Monk's areas. Some are found lying on the ground while others are found as part of an environment. These weapons can be used for solving certain puzzles (e.g. a sword in one level cuts down ropes holding lava needed to burn Tarkatan warriors) or can be used to attack enemies directly. There are two ways to use a weapon - straight up attacking, or impaling an enemy. The basic attacks with weapons correspond to the 3 basic attack buttons; also impaling (Black Button Xbox, R2 Button PlayStation 2) an enemy with a weapon, will cause damage over time. The weapon will stay imbedded in an enemy until they die. There are 3 weapon classes as well. Two-Handed Blades, One- Handed Blades, and Dual-Weapons. As expected Two-Handed weapons are slower, but do more damage. The opposite can be said about One-Handed weapons. Dual-Weapons get the best of both worlds, being fast and inflicting decent damage. <^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^> [V. Walkthrough] <^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^ The adventure that is Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks begins mere seconds after the opening FMV sequence concludes. We see our heroes fall into the depths of Goro's Lair. After orienting themselves, Raiden appears with some choice words of advice. Raiden goes on to say that the monks won the first Mortal Kombat tournament and that Shang Tsung is a poor loser. He warns us that we need to exit Goro's Lair before the island crumbles into the sea. Our main objective is to head to the Wu Shi Academy. *NOTE* I went through this game as Liu Kang meaning there may be some MINOR differences if you play through with Kung Lao. *NOTE* -->Goro's Lair: <^>^<^>^<^>^<^> > Area 1: Take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the kontrols; they take a little getting used to. When you are ready, head to the middle of the lair and pick up the Blue Dragon Token. Liu Kang looks around and sees menacing eyes staring back at him through the blackness. Moments later, many Moloch looking creatures (Oni, or demons) emerge. Before we get a chance to fight them, Raiden says that we should learn to use quick attacks, launching attacks, power attacks and throws. Follow Raiden's words of advice, and use these attacks to dispatch the Oni that appear. Once the initial batch of enemies is disposed of, another Blue Dragon Token appears. Touch it and Raiden tells you to perform your special moves. Do what he says to dispatch of the new Oni that appear. Note that there are skulls and various bones littered throughout this area. These can be picked up and thrown at the Oni; they don't do much damage, but are fun anyway. -->*Red Ying/Yang Token*: Also of note, if you throw one of the Oni into the skeleton hanging on the wall, a red ying/yang icon appears. Pick it up to unlock new concept art. Once these two Oni are killed, walk to the right side of the screen and pick up the next Blue Dragon Token. Raiden informs you that you are able to perform certain attacks while running. Another Oni lumbers out for you to try your new running attacks on. Once he is disposed of the gate on the right side of the screen opens. Follow it into the next area. > Area 2: This area closely resembles the starting area. Once you enter, gates close all around you. Grab the Blue Dragon Token to hear Raiden talk about blocking and evading. Oni then drop down to attack. The on-screen directions say to block an enemy attack in order to progress. There are an infinite amount of enemies here, so do what the directions say. After the Oni is downed, head to the right to pick up another Blue Dragon Token. After touching the token, Kung Lao warns the player as three Oni attack you from all sides. Liu Kang fights them all off using Multi- Directional kombat which allows the player to fight multiple enemies at the same time. Three more Oni lumber through an opening. Use this new form of kombat to kill them. Once they are dead, a gate opens on the left side of the screen. Another Blue Dragon Token lays there for the taking. Raiden then informs the player about air kombat. Two more Oni appear from the depths. Dispatch them to continue. -->*Red Ying/Yang Token*: There is a token in this room right above the entrance. To reach this tough secret, you must launch an Oni into the air. While they are airborne, throw them. This should give you enough height to reach the token. The right side of the screen contains another Blue Dragon Token. Touch it and Raiden talks about weapon kombat. A sword then appears on the ground. Pick it up and get used to its kontrols. Dispatch of the Oni with it to continue. After they perish, the gate on the right side of the screen opens. Enter it to continue. > Area 3: A quick cut-scene surveys the surrounding area. It turns out we are in the bottom of The Pit! To the right are very sharp spikes that the player should watch out for. Ahead are a couple Oni; they should be no problem especially if you still have the sword handy from the previous area. Also of note, if you throw an enemy near the spikes they will land on them, killing them instantly. Realize however, that killing an enemy this way yields no EXP. Another cut-scene shows Johnny Cage uppercut an Oni onto the spikes from a platform above. He points to the way off the island. Begin by jumping on the ledge to the right. Kill the Oni and follow the path left. Jump up these two ledges and continue right. There are four platforms that you must jump to. The fourth one leads up to another ledge where Johnny Cage was. A fun little side note: if you remember from Mortal Kombat 1's Pit stage, there was the silhouette of a witch on her broom flying across the moon. Well in Shaolin Monks she makes her return. Watch the moon in the background to catch a glimpse of her. Once you start crossing the platform Cage was on, Reptile appears. He goes on to say that he does not serve Shang Tsung and promptly disappears. Oni begin attacking here. They should be pretty easy as all you have to do is throw them off the ledge onto the spikes below. Continue along the ledge into the dark cave at then end. > Area 4: This room looks similar to the first few rooms of the game. It is different in that there are blood pools coming from all four corners of the room, leading to the center. There is also another Dragon Token floating above the blood pool. Pick it up to obtain a Fatality. Raiden informs us we must perform a Fatality in order to open the gates. But first we need to build up our Fatality Meter by performing combos. So, do just that on the three Oni that pop out. When the meter is full hit the Fatality button to perform it. -->*Fatality 1 (Liu Kang): Shaolin Soccer - Down, Left, Up, Right, X/Square. Description: Liu Kang uppercuts his opponent's head off. With the head airborne, Kang jumps up and kicks it hard into his enemy. The enemy proceeds to explode into blood and bone as Kang looks on. Once this is done, the door to the left opens. Enter it to continue -->*Red Ying/Yang Token #1*: The first token is hidden behind a cell door. The only way to obtain this secret is to be playing with two players. In the following room are two switches. Each player must stand on a switch to open the gate. -->*Red Ying/Yang Token #2*: The second token is a bit tricky to get. If you notice, there is a chandelier hanging in the middle of this area. You need to launch one of the Oni into the air. While airborne, you must perform your Throw maneuver into it. It comes crashing down revealing more concept art. If you kill the enemies, don't worry. Just exit the room and come back in. > Area 5: Upon entering this new area, a cut-scene shows four Oni munching on a dead one. They playfully hit each other as they try to eat as much as they can. Eventually they notice you and lumber over to attack. Use all the moves you have learned thus far (especially Fatalities!) to dispatch of them pretty easily. Once they are dead, run to the right side of the room. Raiden then informs us that we need to throw an enemy into the broken down wall to progress. There is also another Dragon Token over here. Pick it up to get Raiden's message again. After throwing an enemy into the wall, run through it to reach the next area. -->*Red Ying/Yang. Token*: There is another token on the far right side of this room above the weak wall. Do the same thing as the chandelier to reach this icon. Launch an Oni into the air, and while airborne throw him. You should be able to reach the token that way. It is a Fatality Input Image. > Area 6: This new area contains a Save Point immediately to the player's right. I would highly advise saving at this point. After saving, start to head across the bridge. A cut-scene then shows to Oni fall onto the bridge only to have two massive boulders fall onto their heads causing the bridge to give way. Raiden then tells us to look around before trying something new. "You never know what you might find." By clicking the thumbstick into panoramic view, we are shown that there is a ledge near the entrance to this area. Head over to head and fall down a few ledges. Once on the ground, a huge Oni breaks through the side of the cement wall. He carries a big club and is surrounded by Oni minions. <^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^ |Boss - Oni Warlord| <^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^ Oni Warlord - This boss isn't too hard as long as his minions are not near you when you attack the Warlord. Try to kill them away from him and the spikes. The fastest way to do that is to throw them onto the spikes. The Warlord himself goes down pretty fast if you use a combination of weak attacks and launchers (he won't get launched but, they do a fair bit of damage). Watch out for the big club he carries around as it can cause massive damage if you are directly hit. His swings are pretty easy to detect though. So evading them is essential. He has a big overhead smash (which can hit his minions, if he misses you) and a twirl around attack that has a pretty big radius. Just keep on him, and you'll eventually kill him. After the boss dies, he leaves behind a Dragon Token. Pick it up to learn the Long Jump Ability. If you haven't guessed it already, you need to head back up to the broken down bridge and long jump across it. Just use the ledges on the side of the pit to get back up there. Save again if you like, then head across the bridge. Once halfway across, a cut-scene shows you to be surrounded by two Masked Guards. Liu Kang Bicycle Kicks one away. Raiden then chimes in saying that they hold the key to the only portal on the island. These enemies are a bit tougher than the Oni in that they block a lot. I try to just use my Fatalities against them as they are 1-hit kills. But dodging their attacks and following up with a high hitting juggle kombo works just as well. Once you have the key, run toward the lightning portal. Jump into it to be transported to the Wu Shi Academy. A cut-scene shows a pristine chain of islands with the narrator explaining the history of Mortal Kombat II and the rise to power of Shao Kahn in Outworld. We stop at the Wu Shi Academy where we see Johnny Cage, Sonya, Liu Kang and Kung Lao standing before Raiden. He has a monk following him around carrying four Olympic style medals. Raiden places one around Liu's neck. Sonya also gets one for her good duties. Johnny Cage gets one also for being a valuable ally to Raiden and the Shaolin Order. Kung Lao receives a medal for standing up for his family heritage. All of a sudden Baraka orders his Tarkatan brethren to launch a flaming spiked ball into the courtyard of the Wu Shi Academy. They break open the front most doors and start attacking random monks. Raiden orders Liu Kang and Kung Lao to defend the academy. -->Wu Shi Academy: <^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^ > Area 1: We start this new area in what appears to be forest surrounding the academy. Next to the player is a small lantern which can be broken for a sliver of health. Once you are ready, head down the path toward the stream in the distance. Two Tarkatan minions ambush you from the bushes. These baddies can be pretty tough thanks to their amazing speed and powerful blades; they also have Baraka's patented Blade Spark move, which should be avoided. I recommend fighting them one at a time. As with the Masked Guards, use Fatalities as often as possible. Once they are downed, continue on the path toward another Tarkata. Once he is dead, (you can use the spikes sticking out of the hills for an easy kill) continue on down the path. You eventually end up at an intersection with the left path leading to spikes and the right path leading to a bridge. The left path is inaccessible as of now because we don't have the Fist of Ruin move yet. So head right. As you start to cross the bridge, a cut-scene shows a huge boulder slamming into the top of the bridge. If you are caught under it as it collapses, you take damage; so watch out for that. Across the bridge you will witness another cut-scene that shows a Tarkatan warrior fling a helpless monk onto a catapult. He is then flung into oblivion. Proceed forward and engage these Tarkatan bullies in Mortal Kombat. If you are good at aiming your throws, you can actually toss one of the baddies onto the same catapult as the monk. Once they are dead, head up the slopes to the left near the fire breathing dragon (the right side with the Masked Guard is not accessible yet). At the top of the slopes and to the right, you will see a Tarkata standing in front of a pile of spiked balls. The object here is to throw him into the balls sending them below breaking the wall near the Masked Guard. With that done, head back to the broken down wall. Near the slopes and fire breathing statue, portal in two more Tarkatan warriors. Take them down and proceed past the broken wall. Around the bend, another Tarkata awaits. You need to throw this guy up into the catapult behind him. Once that's done he is flung into another barricade near where you threw the other Tarkata threw the spiked balls. Head back up that way and through the broken barricade. Two more Tarkatan warriors portal in here. Throw one of them threw the spiked ball barricade. Kill the other one and return to where you broke the first barricade. Prepare to engage in a little old-school platforming. What stands before you is a pit of spikes with pieces of land in the middle of them. The land pieces have fire breathing statues on them, so timing is of the essence. Time your jumps right and land on the other side. Jump onto the rubble and onto the bridge. Head all the way down it to the right and exit this area. > Area 2: A cut-scene shows Sonya upset that many monk has been slaughtered. She sees one limping around. Baraka then drops down and cuts him into pieces. Sonya and Baraka engage in kombat. Sonya kicks him around. Baraka then trips her up, slams her into a wall, picks her up and jumps into a portal. When you regain control of your character, drop down to the ground below. Three Tarkatan warriors will portal in and charge. You are lucky though, as Johnny Cage is around for the next little while to help you out. Also, by this time, you should have enough experience points to purchase some new abilities. To do so, hit Start and scroll over to the Moves tab. Here, you will be able to power up specific moves. If you are playing with Liu Kang, I recommend buying the High/Low Fireball for 3000 points as well as the Bicycle Kick for another 3000 points. Anyway, back to the action. Take out the three Baraka-lites and continue on. Ignore the two depressible plates to the left of the screen as that puzzle can only be solved if you are playing ko-op. Listen to Johnny Cage and follow him/run to the back of the Academy and through the small tunnel. A short cut-scene follows with three Tarkatan warriors ambushing you. Johnny Cage yells to protect him while he opens the gate. Kill these baddies and the gate will open in front of you. A cut-scene shows part of the academies wall has collapsed. Johnny Cage then tells you to protect him as he opens the gate. Directly to the left of the screen is a little indentation which you can climb up on. Follow this path along until you reach Cage, but watch out for spiked balls being hurled at you off-screen. Another three Tarkatas show up to make your life miserable. Kill them before they have a chance to attack Cage. One they are defeated, Johnny tells you to follow him to open the center gate. Run back the way you came and drop back down into the center courtyard. Here you find Johnny Cage trying to open the center gate with ANOTHER three Tarkatan warriors attacking. Take them out before they can take Cage out. Some will probably still be alive by the time cage opens the gate. Inside the gate Cage opens (you need to run back to the start of this area to get to it) is a sword which is used to cut the rope of cauldrons of lava. But first pick up the Dragon Token which gives your character a health upgrade; in other words it extends your life bar. Now that you have gotten that, pick up the sword and head back to the main courtyard. More Tarkata will have warped in so help Cage fend them off. Once they are defeated climb up the small pillar like objects near the small pond. Once at the top, begin to slice the ropes holding the cauldrons in place. Once sliced, a cut-scene will play showing Lao and Kang knocking over the cauldrons causing many a Tarkata being drowned by the scalding hot lava. A gate to a new area of the academy is now accessible as well. Jump back down to the main courtyard and run through the left tunnel and all the way down the path exiting this area for now. (Cage should be following you). > Area 4: A cut-scene will then play showing two Tarkata surrounding Raiden who easily dispatches them. Shang Tsung then floats down with Raiden calling him a traitor. They begin to rush each other and an explosion occurs. We are now back to actual gameplay. Jump down the small hill in front of you and head to the right. Here, you will encounter a few fire-breathing statues which you can easily dodge. Keep following this path until you exit this area. > Area 5: Another short cut-scene will play showing that many parts of the Wu Shi Academy are now engulfed in flames. It is your job to put the fires out. When you enter this area, the gate with which you entered through shuts. You are stuck. This area is packed with random monks who have caught on fire. Avoid them as best as possible, as if they run into you, you will be harmed; don't try to attack them as that has the same effect. Past the first wall of flames, you will see a second wall. "Inside" this wall of fire is a lever which we need to pull. So carefully jump over the flames and hit the Interact Button. Harkening back to Mortal Kombat I/Deadly Alliance a "Test Your Might" mini-game will begin. You will have to tap the A/X button as fast as you can to raise the meter past a predetermined line. Once past the line, tap the L/L1 Trigger to break the lever. Once that is done, a gate will rise and a steady flow of water will flow along the upper catwalks of the academy dousing a nearby house, causing all fire to cease. Jump back out of the walls of flame and jump onto the roof of the house that was doused; once there, jump onto the catwalk. Once on the catwalk, jump up to the ledged on the left and then onto the pillar. Once here, another "Test Your Might" mini-game will begin. Follow the same instructions as before. Once that lever is destroyed, another flow of water will douse a portion of the catwalk that was on fire. Jump back down, and run along the now fire-free catwalk. Jump up the ledge and up to another catwalk. Another lever waits here. You know what to do :) With that lever now destroyed, yet another portion of the catwalk is doused. Jump down to the other side of the catwalk and since we don't have the Fist of Ruin ability yet, jump off the ledge in front of you. Jump up the ledge and onto the top of yet another pillar. Break the lever and more water will put out more fire, what a surprise. Jump down the other side of the pillar and follow the water flow to the end. To your right, you will see the roof of a house. Jump onto that roof and again onto the house across from it. Jump up to the top of this area and kill the Tarkata. Break the lever (for the last time!) and a massive gate will open to let out a strong flow of water to finally put out all the flames on the ground. With all those flames doused, jump back down there and a cut-scene will play with Lao, Kang and Cage. Once that is over, run back out the way you came in originally through the tunnel to the left. > Area 6: An FMV will play showing Johnny Cage (Shang Tsung morphed into him) walking cautiously through a forest. He then sees Liu Kang and Kung Lao fighting playfully. Lao and Kang then see Raiden (Tsung) step out of the woods and tell them that Shang Tsung is aiding the Tarkatas in their mission. Raiden (Tsung) tells Liu and Kung to go to Outworld and continue their mission there. When you regain control of your character, you will be back in the area with the fire-breathing statues. Carefully navigate past them and continue left until you can drop down a ledge near a wall of spikes. Once down there, a couple Tarkatas pop out to play. Dispatch of them and jump down the small ledge in front of you. Here, you will encounter swinging barbed tree trunks. Carefully dodge them (they swing pretty slow, so it shouldn't be too hard). Once past those, you will be faced with two Masked Guards. They should be pretty easy as long as you stay locked onto them to block. Once they attack and you block, follow up with a nice kombo, or pull off a Fatality. Once both are dead, lightning will strike allowing you to run up a small hill. At the top, to the left is a save point. I highly recommend saving at this time. Once you have saved, jump into the menacing portal to the right of the save point. As you are about to jump however, Raiden appears and questions the "safety" of the portal; it was created by Shang Tsung. He then goes on to say that he will make it safe for Lao and Kang to enter. All three jump in; Johnny Cage follows behind them after making sure no one is looking. Raiden parts with a few choice words of wisdom and disappears. -->The Portal: <^>^<^>^<^>^>^ Once you regain control of your character, you will be faced with two Shadow Priests (from the portal background in Mortal Kombat II). These guys can be kind of tough as they can teleport, shoot purple balls of energy, and strike you with lightning. As long as you block and are quick enough to dodge their projectiles, they should go down pretty quick. You can also (if you are playing with Liu Kang, just Flying Kick them into the portal in which you entered killing them instantly, but yielding no experience). With the two Shadow Priests down, follow the path to the right. (going left here, will lead you to a puzzle that is ko-op only. For those of you playing ko-op, go right instead and have each of your characters stand on the pressure sensitive plates. A ledge will begin to protrude from the column. Jump up there to receive Johnny Cage as playable in the VS. Mode). When the path splits, take the uppermost path and Long Jump the gap. Once on the other side, jump up the ledge and two Demon Captains attack. These guys are also pretty easy if you block their projectiles and follow up with kombo juggles. Once they are dead continue on down the path until you reach the end. A portal appears. Enter it to arrive at the Evil Monastery. -->Evil Monastery: <^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^ > Area 1: A cut-scene shows Kitana beckoning us to find and attack her. Run up the steps to the actual monastery itself and another cut-scene occurs. Raiden appears and says that Kitana is actually an ally to us and that we should seek her out. Lao questions this, and Raiden explains that Outworld is not always as it once was. When you regain control of your character, run into the main room. Three Demon Archers will burst through the windows on the upper level. These guys can be pretty annoying. Just try and keep an eye on them at all times as they have a habit of shooting you with their arrows while you are in the middle of a kombo. Once they are dispatched of, run up the stairs and a Demon Captain drops down; another one appears shortly thereafter. Kill them and pull the lever with another "Test Your Might" mini-game. The lever then activates spike that protrude from the top of two empty cauldrons back on the first floor. Go back down there (the room is now populated with baddies) and throw two of them onto each of the set of spikes. With that done, a door on the upper level opens. Dispatch of any remaining bad guys and go through the door and up the stairs. *Golden Dragon Token* There is a Dragon Token outside one of the upstairs windows. All one needs to do is break the glass, by shooting it with a projectile or throwing a bad guy through it. To obtain the koin, repeat that same process (fire a projectile at it, fireball with Kang, hat with Lao, or throw an enemy at the koin itself. Doing so will reveal a Red Ying/Yang symbol in that very room. Pick it up to unlock concept art. (Thanks to Vegeto888, and the many, many other people who E-Mailed me in regards to this secret). > Area 2: Another cut-scene shows with Kitana taunting us yet again. Follow the stairs up to the top (grabbing the Dual-Weapons if you wish) where we are faced with three Demon Archers and a Demon Handler. I recommend killing all the archers first, as they pose the most problems with their arrows. After they are dead, you may notice that there is no noticeable way of leaving this room. That is where the spikes on the far side come into play. You need to throw the Handler onto the spikes and jump onto his body to reach the top platform, clever eh? His body disappears pretty quickly though, but don't worry because there is a never ending spawn of bad guys to help you with this puzzle. Once on the top platform, follow it up and around to another set of stairs. Run up them to exit this area. > Area 3: At the top of the stairs are a Demon Archer and two new bad guys with flaming swords. It is probably wise to do a Fatality on one of the flaming sword guys to get him out of the way. Then concentrate on the other two. The flaming sword guys do a fair bit of damage with their sweeping attack and fire along the ground attack. As always, block a lot and you should be fine. Once that initial batch of guys is dead, a second batch appears. Once that batch is dead, run up the two sets of stairs, along the catwalk and up another set of stairs to exit this area. > Area 4: A cut-scene shows Kitana yelling at us to keep up and not to be late at our own funeral. Once the cut-scene ends pick up the Dragon Token; congratulations, you learned a Multality which instantly kills multiple enemies at one time. We now need to perform one to progress any further. With that, three Demon Captains fall from the ceiling. Proceed to beat the living hell out of them until Raiden tells you to hit the Fatality Button. Once that is done, hit it and follow the on- screen button commands to do the Multality. With Liu Kang, he stands and begins to emit many fireballs from his body instantly tearing his enemies apart. With the Multality now learned, jump up the couple of ledges and Long Jump across the gap. A gate closes behind you and a Shadow Priest emerges from the ground along with two Demon Captains. Kill these guys and the gates drop allowing you to pass. Long Jump across the gap on the opposite side you came from. This time a Shadow Priest and three Demon Captains emerge. For easy kills, just throw them off the edge of this area. With all of them dead, Long Jump across the new gap. Two Shadow Priests and two Demon Captains drop down to have fun. Use Multality if you want, or throw them off the edge, it doesn't matter. Once they are dead, a gate lowers allowing you access to a couple ledges. Watch out though, as Kitana tosses down entire stone columns while you are trying to traverse the ledges. Dodge them and continue on to the top. A much needed save point awaits; so save your game and head up to the top of the monastery. <^>^<^>^<^>^<^> |Boss - Kitana| <^>^<^>^<^>^<^> Once at the top another cut-scene occurs. Kitana reveals she is the loyal daughter of Shao Kahn; since Liu and Lao are enemies of Shao Kahn, they are also enemies of hers. Prepare to fight. Kitana is not terribly difficult if you block and dodge her fan projectiles. When she misses with a fan throw she will be a bit dazed; run up to her and pummel her with a nice air juggle. Also, don't get too close to her without blocking, as she will dice you up pretty good with a powerful fan kombo. Once she is at about half health, she jumps into a portal. Raiden then appears saying that Kitana is under some sort of spell. We must set her free. Liu Kang and Kung Lao then jump into the portal after her. We enter the portal and are immediately treated with a collapsing bridge. In this cut-scene, Kitana tries to throw her fans at Liu Kang/Kung Lao, but he dodges them Matrix-style. Kitana then jumps backward and begins to be enveloped by a statues gaze. She is imprisoned there for the time being. As she tries to get out, Jade and Mileena warp in from another portal. Jade eventually releases Kitana as Mileena keeps Liu Kang occupied. With Kitana freed, all three of them gang up on us. A message from Raiden then appears telling us to weaken Kitana to set her back up on that device to imprison her. But be careful, as Jade and Mileena will try to free her. Once, the battle starts, all three of these lovely ladies attack us. Focus all your attacks on Kitana, keeping a watchful eye on Mileena and her teleport kick, as well as Jade's fireball attack. After a few well landed hits on Kitana, a cut-scene plays showing your character hurl Kitana into the device once more. While she is trapped, Mileena and Jade will attempt to free her; a little meter appears saying "Spell Time," and once this meter fully depletes, Kitana is freed. You must stop them; or the battle with continue unnecessarily. With Liu Kang, just Dragon Kick them away as they get close. That is the easiest possible thing to do. With Kung Lao, try his Teleport Kick or Hat Throw to back them off the contraption. Once Kitana is freed from her spell, she faints and tells your character to kill Jade and Mileena. These two can be pretty tough to fight at the same time. There is a trick however as evidenced by Raiden's words of advice. There are two circle areas surrounded by small spikes on the left and right sides of the screen. If you knock one of the two Outworld Assassins into this area, a cage springs up from the ground, trapping them. You only have to fight one of them at a time now; while they are trapped, you can walk up to the level outside the cage and play the "Test Your Might" mini-game again to inflict massive damage on them as well. Take advantage of this. Be weary of Mileena's teleport kick, ground roll and sai throw as they all happen very fast and can leave you vulnerable to subsequent hits if not dodged; also be careful of that annoying purple fireball from Jade. Once their health meters are depleted, they become stunned. Once both are stunned, you will have to perform a Fatality to finish both off. Hit the Fatality Button, input the combination and watch as Liu Kang whacks Mileena in the gut with Jade's staff; Kang then proceeds to stab Mileena in the face with both of Mileena's sais. A cut-scene plays where Kitana is introduced to Liu Kang and Kung Lao. We learn that Shao Kahn is behind this attack. Mileena is then brought forth for questioning. She attacks all three of them, and runs off, not before yanking her sais out of Jade's face however. Kitana then runs off as well after Mileena. After the cut-scene a Dragon Token appears. Pick it up to learn the Fist of Ruin attack; powerful attacks now break some objects in the game world. We have also obtained a Tournament Victory for defeating this opponent (more on the importance of those later). Grab the experience orbs in front of you and jump into the portal to be warped back to the Monastery. Raiden appears to tell us that every major victory we have in Outworld weakens Shang Tsung. With Tsung weakened, his powers to attack Earth will not be as potent. Backtrack all the way through the Evil Monastery to the point; save your game on the way back down to avoid any unnecessary backtracking). As you make your way back through, you can put your Fist of Ruin ability to work. You may have noticed big statues of monks standing around. We can now break those with our new ability. They are scattered throughout this area, so break them all (they are pretty much in plain view). Once at the bottom of the steps leading up to the Kitana battle, we see two statues guarding an ominous portal. Break the statues and enter the portal, to be warped to none other than The Portal! A short cut-scene plays showing Reptile jump into a portal on the upper level. Liu Kang and Kung Lao have a discussion as to who is going to kill him. Kung Lao runs off, leaving Liu Kang by himself. <^>^<^>^<^>^<^> |The Portal II| <^>^<^>^<^>^<^> Once you regain control of your character, two Shadow Priests and a Demon Captain greet you. Kill these nuisances and follow the path up and around. At the top of the little ramp, will be two Shadow Priests guarding a portal; dispatch of them, and enter the Living Forest. <^>^<^>^<^>^<^> |Living Forest| <^>^<^>^<^>^<^> > Area 1: Once here, a cut-scene appears. Liu Kang and Kung Lao talk about Kitana and trying to find Reptile; they then split up. Once you regain control, follow the path downward until you reach a statue. Use your Fist of Ruin ability (B for Xbox, Circle for PS2) to smash it and continue. Drop down the little ledge and prepare for kombat. A Putrid Corpse rises out of the ground to attack you. These guys are pretty easy as their attacks are slow and they shamble around like an old man; be careful however as they can actually vomit up blood which can hurt you. Kill it (another one appears seconds after). Watch out for the huge tree looming over the battlefield. It can swipe at you and cause massive damage. You can try to throw a Corpse into it and watch the tree smash it into the ground for extra damage. You should also throw a Putrid Corpse into the Living Tree in the background (there are three of these total, and it allows you to progress once enemies have been thrown into them all). The tree will then reveal a message: "Satisfy the forest's cravings to pass." Watch out for the brambles on the right side of the screen as well. With those baddies dead, use your Fist of Ruin ability to knock out the two statues standing in front of a wall of brambles; this causes the brambles to fall apart allowing you access to what was behind them. As you cross into that new area toward the save point, 3 Putrid Corpses rise up. If you have your Fatality Meter high enough, you can perform a Multality; if not just kill them regularly. After they are dead, save your game. After saving, run back out near the huge tree, and Long Jump over the brambles to the other side. Two more Clay Statues are hear for you to break; one has nothing, the other contains some health. Run forward and you will see shadows running across the ground up to you. Out pop Brothers of Shadow. These guys can be pretty tough as they are extremely fast and attack with their serrated blades which do some good damage. You can try throwing them into the brambles you leaped across for extra damage. Once they are dead, continue forward, where you will have to fight four more Brothers of Shadow. I recommend building up your Fatality Meter to perform another Multality on these guys, as four at a time can be a little bit overwhelming. Watch out for the living tree and the brambles on the far end of the screen. With these guys dead, Long Jump over the brambles so you grab onto the ledge above them. Enter the room to exit this area. > Area 2: In this new area, we are faced with two paths. We can either continue forward or drop down a ledge or Long Jump over a gap with water flowing beneath it. Both end up leading to the same place, so it doesn't matter which way you go. If you drop down the ledge, there will be a few snake monsters down there to bite you if you get to close. After having crossed to the other side, two Putrid Corpses greet you. There is another Living Tree here. Throw a bad guy into it's mouth to reveal another message: "The forest hungers for life." Kill them and 2 of the Clay Soldiers guarding a doorway spring to life along with two new Corpses. The only way to attack these Soldiers is to use your Fist of Ruin attack three times to break their shields; once those are broken, you can unload on them. Watch out for their charging attack and their annoying ground pound, which sends you flying into the air. For some easy kills, throw them off that ledge near the water, and just throw them into the brambles to kill them instantly. With everyone dead, enter the entrance closest to the waterfall (guarded by two prone statues). > Area 3: In this new area, we need to jump across the land strips to get to those stone statues. Don't fall into the water or the snake head will take a bite out of you. Once on the other side, another tree comes to life to aggravate the hell out of everyone. Two of the four Clay Soldiers also come to life to do kombat with you. Just break their shields, and hit them with everything. Once they are dead, you can break the other two statues for health if you like. With those two dead, you will see small platforms of land sticking out of the water making a trail of sorts. We need to traverse these small plots of land up to the waterfall. With before, don't fall into the water or you will get bitten by a snake. On the last jump, you will need to Long Jump to make it. Once to the waterfall, jump to the ledge on the left of it. Continue making the jumps all the way to the top. At the top enter the door where the water is flowing out of to exit this area. > Area 4: In this new area, continue forward into the water. At this point, spikes shoot up on all sides and four snake heads appear. To make matters worse, we have to deal with a couple Putrid Corpses. To solve this "puzzle" one must throw the Putrid Corpses (there is a never ending supply of them) into the snake heads; the snakes proceed to throw them up into the air and catch them in their mouths. They then lower under the water to feast on their tasty meal. With the snake heads happy, the spikes surrounding the small pool of water will lower. Proceed onward and save your game. Jump up the small ledge and head left if you need some health (break the two statues there). With some health replenished continue up the right ledge and up the path. Two Putrid Corpses drop down. Throw one of them into the Living Trees mouth to get the third and last message, "Reptile's secret lies within the trees." Cryptic, no? Jump up the ledge on the left and into the snake head statue's mouth to enter Reptile's Lair. <^>^<^>^<^<^>^<^ |Reptile's Lair| <^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^ > Area 1: Once you enter this area, a gate closes behind you. Proceed forward and stand on the symbol in the middle of the room. Small doors will open and Clay Soldiers will rush at you. Once they get close enough, you must destroy them with a punch or kick. You must break both at the same time to continue. With those two dead, stand on the switch again and this time 4 statues will shoot out. You have to be a little faster in attacking them to continue. With those 4 broken, "prepare for more." Stand on the switch a third time and 5 will shoot out. This is a bit tougher and requires patience. When you break the last 5, a Dragon Token appears. Pick it up to obtain the Brutality! With this new ability we can instantly kill multiple enemies for a short time. With that, 4 Putrid Corpses erupt from the ground. Pound the hell out of them until Raiden prompts you to hit the Fatality Button. Hit it, and input the correct button commands. Your character will now be on fire and pressing the various attack buttons do devastating damage to enemies. With those enemies dead, proceed forward into the next area of Reptile's Lair. > Area 2: In this new area, we find ourselves in a long drippy tunnel with Clay Soldier statues everywhere; break all of these to reveal experience orbs and health orbs. At the end of this semi-long tunnel, is a very narrow strip of land leading up to an entrance. Carefully navigate this landing strip to the top; the steam rising from the depths can temporarily block your view. At the top enter the door to exit the area. > Area 3: A cut-scene plays showing Liu Kang walk into a room full of holes in the wall. The camera then pans out and we see Reptile standing on a ledge above the doorway we entered through. Out of nowhere a gigantic snake (think Resident Evil style big) pops out of the wall. Reptile jumps onto its head and drops down a hole in the middle of the room. The snake then knocks Liu Kang back and starts slithering along the ground. <^>^<^>^<^>^< |Boss - Snake| <^>^<^>^<^>^<^ The first part of this battle has the snake slithering all over the ground. Don't even try to attack it, you will just get hurt. Instead, target the pillar the snake is slithering around on (the one that is already damaged) and perform your Fist of Ruin attack. Three hits should do the trick. With that broken, the snake slithers out the main entrance and back in. It is now moving all over the place through the various holes in the wall. The rubble from the broken pillar allows us to jump onto the sections of ledge that surround the room. Once on those ledges, we can now target the next pillar; it has a weak section too. Attack it three times with your Fist of Ruin ability to knock it out and cause another pathway to be revealed. With the second pillar knocked out, continue running and jumping across those ledges to get to the third pillar. Watch out for the snake though as it slithers pretty fast in and out of the wall, hitting you if you're not careful. With the third pillar knocked out, we have to find our way to the fourth. As your character is about to run up to it, the snake breaks through the ledge. You will now have to Long Jump the gap when the snake is out of sight in the wall. The fourth pillar breaks, and huge pieces of stone fall onto the snake killing it. The rubble also falls into the ground creating a large hole to which your character falls into. At the very bottom is Reptile! <^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^ |Boss - Reptile| <^>^<^>^<^<^>^<^ Reptile's move set is pretty limited as he rarely attacks you hand to hand. He mostly relies on his special moves from past Mortal Kombats, namely his slide move, invincibility move, and green acid spit move. At times, he will vanish and appear at the top of a pile of rubble. You cannot hit him while he is up there; he begins to shoots fireballs at you that do moderate damage if not dodged. With Reptile at about half health, he turns completely invisible. If you hit him, he will become visible again for a short time. This can get pretty tough. His head sometimes shows through to give you an idea of where he is. His fireballs also are not invisible, so watch out for those; they can do massive damage if he hits you successfully more than once in a row. With Reptile's health depleted completely, the Fatality Button will appear. Hit it and perform the button inputs. Liu Kang (it's different for Lao) will punch Reptile hard in the face sending him reeling. Reptile will come back with a punch that Liu Kang dodges. Kang then puts Reptile over his knee and proceeds to rip at his lover jaw eventually dislodging it. Reptile falls to the ground almost dead. With no mercy, Kang punches the hell out of Reptile and proceeds to squeeze his throat killing him by asphyxiation. Reptile leaves behind a Dragon Token. Pick it up to gain the Wall Climb ability. Raiden tells us to use it to climb out of Reptile's Lair. We have also obtained another Tournament Victory. Before you leave, pick up the many experience orbs littered about. With all the experience collected, find the part of the dead snake closest to the wall. Hit it with the Fist of Ruin to break it apart, leaving a way to climb up the wall. Jump onto the wall and climb to the top of the sewer; exit this area afterward. A cut-scene plays with Raiden telling us that killing Reptile was "very good." When you regain control, run out of the long tunnel and exit Reptile's Lair. <^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^>^ |Living Forest II| <^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^ Back in the Living Forest, make your way back to the entrance. On your way there, another cut-scene plays. Raiden appears again and questions Kung Lao and calls him a "liability to the tournament." Raiden trusts Liu Kang to fix the corruption of this realm. Continuing on your way to the entrance yet another cut-scene shows with Raiden saying that the Soul Tombs are the source of Shang Tsung's power and that his ancestor's will guide him. When you finally reach the save point (near the start of the Living Forest) save your game, and exit to The Portal. <^>^<^>^<^>^>^<^ |The Portal III| <^>^<^>^<^>^>^<^ *The rest of the walkthrough will be koming soon* <^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^>^<^> [VIII.
