The first week I owned this game, I couldn't get past Vanessa in Arcade, Kumite was next to impossible, and Training didn't seem to help. Frustrated beyond belief, I just threw everything I ever learned from Street Fighter and Soul Caliber out the window, and began Training with just one character, Jacky. Suddenly, it clicked. I realized how balanced the gameplay was. Everything can be countered, and every move has both strength and weakness. I finally realized that this game stands alone among all fighting games, as perhaps the best fighter ever. So to everyone reading this, and if you're still frustrated, don't give up hope! It will come in time, and you'll love this game when it does. For everyone else, this FAQ will hopefully help you better understand the gameplay and learn some things you didn't know before. This Game Is Impossible!!! <><><><><> ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ This game is extremely different from most other fighters, 3D or otherwise. It is not a button masher at all, so if you are one, you won't want to play this game. It also doesn't have a lot of flashy combos and cool special attacks. It is a fighting game, between semi-normal people practicing real fighting styles. I suggest forgetting everything you ever know about fighting games, and start over from scratch. The fighting system boiled down to its simplest form is based on a Rock-Paper-Scissors game: Guard beats Strike, Throw beats Guard, and Strike beats Throw. A person who rushes forwards and continually attacks will not win, and neither will a person who continually guard. A balance must be struck between the three skills, along with many other such as evade and countering. The game is similar to a sport known as fencing, in which two people fight each other with swords. The two opponents switch off as attacker and defender, and who has the advantage or disadvantage. The person who is attacking has the advantage, and the person who is defending has the disadvantage. When the attacker misses an attack, stands still, is parried or counterattacked, or is evaded, he loses the advantage. He is now at a disadvantage, since now he acts as a defender. Thus, the fight goes back and forth, much like a tug-of-war. For the person just beginning the game, I suggest you use the characters labeled Beginner. They really are the easiest to use, and are suitable for people making the transition from another fighting game to Virtua Fighter. My personal choices would either be Pai Chan or Jacky Bryant, as they have the easiest combos to learn and are well balanced. As you think you understand the game more, try Lei Fei or Lau Chan, as they are also easy to use. However, feel free to experiment, because it's your game, not mine. After it ended, he defeated a new model of Dural who appeared before him. Kage-Maru finally obtained the new item type required to save his mother, Tsuki-Kage. However, Tsuki-Kage actually got worse, transforming into Dural further when the item was used. Ultimately, she turned into Dural completely and "J6" acquired her once more. With Dural again within their grasp, "J6" started to research how they could mass- produce Dural. During their research, "J6" discovered that Tsuki-Kage had remained incomplete for too long which explained her lack of abilities somewhat. "J6" started to look for a new target eligible enough to become a new (complete) Dural. They decided upon "Sarah Bryant". Plans were made so to acquire her and the Fourth World Fighting Tournament was organized. Without mastery of these skills, even the weakest of CPU opponents will bring you to your knees. You can practice these necesssary skills by accessing the Trial option in the Training menu. It will run through all the things you should learn before attempting to play the game. It beats guarding but loses to striking. You can only Throw your opponent if he is guarding or standing still. If he is striking or crouching, you cannot Throw your opponent. A Throw does moderate damage alone, but every character has special Throw moves that multiply the damage. When you see your opponent reaching for you after a guaranteed Throw move, hit P + G to escape the Throw. Most characters have special Down Attacks. These tend to not be so useful against the CPU, as they get up rather quickly from a fall. By tapping U or D when an opponent is in his motion to strike you, you avoid the blow, and can then counterattack or throw your opponent. Some people have trouble evading by just tapping once, but it comes in time. Double-tap if you're really frustrated. Timing is the key however, and it varies from character to character to move to move. After recovering from the attacks he suffered from Dural, Kage resolved to infiltrate the Organization and retrieve his mother. It was inside the Organization that Kage discovered a new more-complete Dural was poised to compete in the Fourth Tournament to receive a final adjustment. Kage also learned that this new Dural contained the secret to saving his mother. "I cannot let her suffer anymore", he thought. And with that, he pledged to enter the Fourth World Fighting Tournament and save his mother's life. His air throw leaves open so many possibilities for damage, and his Hagakura stance confuses many people. He has the only really useful running attack, and the best items out of all the characters. He does only mediocre damage, but his range of attacks makes up for it. Also, he's just cool, and that's that. He is the easiest to use, the easiest to do high damage with, and the easiest guy to whoop ass with. He is the best, and my favorite character, if you didn't already guess :) Very user-friendly, he is an excellent choice for the first time player. However, I notice his attacks can sometimes be predictable, and he loses his edge against guys like Akira. However, he's the only guy I use regularly, so I definitely recommend him. He's often overlooked as the guy that pecks at your shins, but he has a lot of good qualities. He can mix it up like nobody else, making your opponent almost guess blindly to where your next attack will be, high or low. He has a lot of maneuver moves and throws, giving you a major advantage over slower players such as Wolf. All his moves are easy to execute. However, Lion lacks strength, and the ability to create long combos. He plays a lot of poke games with the opponent, and don't expect any combos to appear that take away half the life bar. However, he is rewarding to master, and the most annoying fighter to face (because of his voice mostly). Recommended For: Intermediate Players, Enjoy Poking and Low Punching *Note* - When you face a computer-controlled Lion, he is easily defeatable at any difficulty level no matter when you face him. All you have to do is D p the entire fight. Repeatedly. Apparently, the computer doesn't know how to avoid this, and you can just low punch him until time runs out or he is defeated. I found that Lei Fei is effective against the computer, but when it comes to human opponents, his moves are too slow and easily evaded. You get to pick the character your AI Fighter is going to be, and his/her name. If this is your first time, I suggest picking someone who: a.) Have played with before and know moderately well b.) Doesn't have auto-parries, such as Jacky or Vanessa c.) Someone with tons of different stances, like Lei-Fei d.) NOT Shun-Di or Kage Maru After giving your AI Fighter a spiffy name and saving him to your memory card, its time to begin what you'll be doing with your AI fighter for a long time to come. ------------- 2. Sparring ------------- Sparring is the single most important thing about training an AI Fighter. Without sufficient sparring time, the Dans in Kumite will crush you completely, without mercy. The first time you spar, go through the move list, so the AI learns all the moves he/she can. Some moves may be too advanced for your trainee, represented by a question mark in the AI HUD near the bottom of your screen. If this shows up, just ignore it and keep on working through the moves. You'll teach these again when you go through the move list a fourth or fifth time. For now, just show your AI all the basic moves you can. Teaching Reversals and Parries -------------------------------- Teaching reversals and parries depends a lot on if YOU can do them, not the AI. I'm horrible at reversing, so my AI knows almost none. However, if you can reverse and parry, here's how to teach it: 1.) First, learn what the reverse you're trying to teach reverses Ex.) Akira's Gaimon Chouchu reverses elbows 2.) Use the move it reverses on the AI Ex.) Use an elbow on your AI 3.) When your AI performs the move back, reverse it Ex.) The AI uses an elbow, you use Gaimon Chouchu 4.) A Tech+ should show up in the AI HUD. If not, try again You should spar with your AI Fighter for about 45 minutes or so. If he knows all but the most advanced moves, and can perform them well, then he's ready for his first test run. ----------------- 3. Arcade Mode ----------------- While many people complain about how sparse Arcade Mode is, I see it as a practice mode for Kumite, where you won't lose rank if you lose bouts. During Arcade Mode and Kumite Mode also, you can "coach" your AI fighter from the sidelines, using the X and O buttons. When your AI fighter does something you like, such as a massive combo or reverses a move, press O so the fighter knows this is a good thing to do. If he does something you don't like, such as a move he does repeatedly that leaves him open to throws, hit the X button so he knows this is bad. A word of caution about coaching however. When you press X or O, the AI will look towards you, leaving him/her open for attack. Your best bet is to only coach when the opponent won't have sufficient time to counterattack while your AI fighter's head is turned. How did he/she do? Not too good at all? Amazing? Regardless of his/her performance, its back to Sparring again. ---------------------- 4. Advanced Sparring ---------------------- Now its time to show your AI some moves he wasn't capable of before, shown by the ? mark in the AI HUD. Use some 3 and 4-hit combos on him, and see if he can learn them. If you can't make up any of your own, use the Move List combos or the combos found in Training -> Trial under Mid-air Combos. If no question mark appears, then he'll start to use these combos. However, some characters cannot learn certain moves until they reach a certain level of Kumite. A good example is Akira's Doppu Choushitsu, or his knee attack. AI fighters cannot learn that until 3rd Dan. If a question mark is still appearing in the HUD, this is probably the reason. Now, to repeat some steps. - Repeat steps 3 and 4 until: - Your AI fighter gets up to or defeats Dural - He is using all the combos you taught him effectively - He uses all the defensive moves, such as evading and fall recoveries Once your fighter has done at least 2 of the 3 options, then its time to think about Kumite Mode, the true test of your coaching ability. ---------------- 5. Kumite Mode ---------------- Well, well, this is the big time now...or at least you think. If you followed all the steps above, then your AI should be able to handle the Kyus pretty easily. However, the Dans is where it gets scary. Dans will rip you up if you don't teach him one thing: evading effectively. When you spar, start to evade his attacks a whole lot more, and use the guard-evade also, and guard-evade-throw escape if you can pull it off consistently. A: Akira's knee will definetly go down as one of the hardest moves to use in a fighting game ever. Basically, you have to hold down k+g, and release g after one frame. However, there are 60 frames in a SECOND. So you have to release g after one-sixtieth of a second. Easy, no? The best method of using his knee is to scrape or flick g while holding k. Even then, there is no guarentee that you will pull it off.
